Dan Henderson taps out at 4:53 of the second round after getting caught in rear naked choke.
“I’m not happy. I wanted this to be a stand-up battle. I wanted to duke it out with this guy. I didn’t think he was gonna take me down. I didn’t train ground at all for this fight.”
“I threw a lot of knees to the body. If I could have thrown them to the head, like in Pride, this fight would have been over a long time ago.”
“This guy fought Cro Cop standing up. I thought he was gonna stand and bang with me a little bit, but that’s not what we got tonight.”
Herring wins a split decision, 29-28, 28-29, 29-28.
“When I came out, he actually hit a lot harder than I thought. His movement was real, real good and I thought I was gonna slug him out, but he caught me with a couple of clean shots that hurt me. It takes a lot to hurt me, so more power to him, but I put him in the blender, took him into the deep end and said you want to swing, let’s swing. That’s what the fans came to see.”
The official sheet doesn’t say so, but this has to be through an interpreter:
“Mr. Evan Tanner is a former UFC middleweight champion and I was very impressed by his strength and aggrressiveness. He is an extremely tough opponent.”
“I got him in a Thai clench in the first round and thought I discovered a weakness there. I wanted to revisit it later in the fight, and the opportunity presented itself in the second round. I caught him flush with a knee and was able to finish the fight.”
On what’s next: “It’s up to the UFC. If they feel I am ready for a title shot, I’d be honored. If they want to make me take on another tough opponent before getting a shot at the belt, then that’s what I’ll do.”
Now we’re talking. What a slugfest. Chris Leben takes some serious punishment early one, prompting one fan behind me to yell, “Chris, you need to move your face.” But Leben rallies to drop Alessio Sakara and then delivers three or four big punches before Herb Dean steps in and stops it at 3:36 of the first round.
That fight had more action in half a round than most of the others have had all night.
Yushin Okami scored a second-round knockout against Evan Tanner with a wicked knee to the jaw that dropped Tanner to the mat. He was either dazed or out cold, but either way, completely defenseless. Okami dropped another right on his face, and the referee dove in and stopped it.
Okami improves to 23-4, while Tanner, a former champion who hadn’t fought in nearly two years, falls to 34-7.

Plenty of laughs are in store in the comedy smash of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Steve Coogan plays high-school drama coach Dana Marschz. While trying to stage a lighthearted sequel to Shakespeare's famous tragedy he faces laughable hardships including a bender that leaves him lurching into a liquor store on roller skates in search of the cheapest booze. His flock of students includes one mute girl who's the object of as many random assaults as Kenny from "South Park." And the stage production at the movie's climax includes a song called "Rock Me, Sexy Jesus." More »
