Rock the Vote’s Road Trip comes to UD
The Beastie Boys, Sheryl Crow and Ben Harper will make a free appearance on Thursday, Oct. 30, at the University of Dayton when Rock the Vote’s Road Trip tour bus makes a stop on campus.
The Rock the Vote tour bus will visit UD from 12-2 p.m. The Beastie Boys, Crow and Harper are scheduled to appear at 1:30 p.m. Crow will perform a few songs, and the Beastie Boys and Harper will speak about the importance of voting.
The tour bus is outfitted with computer kiosks that assist in fielding requests for absentee ballots, educating users about key issues and the election process, providing polling locations, early voting locations and more.
The Rock the Vote Road Trip drew 1,000 people on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. Other cities on the tour include Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Denver.
The Beastie Boys, Crow and Harper will perform a concert on Thursday, Oct. 30, at Hara Arena as part of the “Get Out and Vote 08” tour. Tickets for the 7 p.m. show are $35 at the box office and Ticketmaster.

Sounds like all they are doing is voicing(by their appearance alone) their support for Obama in the most effective way available to them. I am guessing they are volunteering their time, with revenue from ticket sales going to the Obama campaign. If that’s “pushing” their political views, I see nothing wrong with it; they’re putting their money (with their in-kind contributions)where their mouths are. Those who don’t want to have these performers’ political views “pushed” on them can choose not to attend.By Tim Shaffer

John, recognizing the complexity of abortion and advocating for a multifaceted approach to the issue which is often termed “pro-choice” is not synonymous with being “pro-abortion.” I’m going to say that most folks who are pro-choice are, in fact, not all about abortions. But they do see that more needs to be done to address the issue rather than just saying its wrong. And I speak about this from a Catholic position, as someone with multiple degrees in theology. So please, don’t say UD is in the wrong for having prominent individuals speak about a worthy cause: getting young people to vote.By Jeremy

I am happy that UD is allowing people to come on campus and talk to the students. They state that the are not endorsing either candidate by allowing them to visit (specifically said at the recent Howard Dean rally on campus). With that being said it appears (from what I have seen) that only the democratic candidates or those that clearly lean democratic have been coming to talk to students even though its an option of both parties.By Maggie

First of all, Howard Dean is not running in this election. Secondly, I think you should all stop assuming because these people are “musicians” that they are automatically democratic. You have no idea. They are not going to hold guns to UD students heads and make them vote for Obama. They are there to encourage voting. Period. Give students at UD a little credit to vote for whichever candidate they feel is best, not the one Sheryl Crow likes. Lastly, as a UD grad I am proud that they are being open minded enough to have this on campus. GO UD!By Maggie
