Obama proposes small business rescue plan
CHILLICOTHE -With the economy still staggering from the falling stock market, Democratic presidential candidate on Friday, Oct. 10, unveiled a small business rescue plan aimed at getting more money to job-producing companies.
Obama said the plan would be similar to efforts after 9-11 to help start up firms, restaurant and shops like those here in Chillicothe.
It will include a program to provide affordable, fixed-rate loans to small businesses to be run through the Small Business Administration’s Disaster Loan Program, he said.
It also would include expanding SBA guarantees to encourage private lending to small businesses and temporary tax incentives for small businesses.
Blair Latoff, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, brushed off Obama’s proposal.
“In an economic downturn it makes absolutely no sense to raise payroll and income taxes on the backbone of America’s job creating small businesses but that’s exactly what Barack Obama is proposing,” she said in a prepared statement.
“Obama’s tax policies will result in a top tax rate of over 55 percent for many small businesses. You don’t have to be an economist to know that taking money from the engine of our economy and giving it to the federal government is not a recipe for economic recovery.”
Obama toned down his attacks on his Republican opponent John McCain - they were harsh on Thursday, Oct. 9 - to focus more on encouraging Americans to pull together and not be swept up with fear. He harked back to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s efforts to get the country through the Great Depression.
“It’s been about rising to the moment when the moment is hard; about having to be Americans, about rejecting panicked division for purposeful unity…. “That’s why we remember that some of the most famous words ever spoken by an American came from a President who took office in a time of turmoil - ‘The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,’ Obama told the crowd of about 5,000 gathered outside the Ross County Courthouse on a cool fall day.
It was Obama’s third event in Ohio’s Appalachian region and Gov. Ted Strickland, a native of the region, urged the crowd not to be swayed by efforts by the McCain-Palin campaign and their followers to discredit Obama. Success with the regions moderate and conservative Democrats is critical to Obama’s campaign.
Hunters and gun owners have nothing to fear from Obama, said Strickland.
“You have nothing to fear from Barack Obama,” Strickland said. “…Unfortunately there have been those who have tried to spread untruths about Barack Obama. Barack Obama is a strong, Christian family man….the McCain-Palin campaign and unfortunately some of their followers would want you to be afraid of Barack Obama.”

It is the republicans that are using socialism. Partly from the bailout and McCain’s plan to buy up bad mortgages at our expense. Of course, the concept could also relate to a lead up to fascism. The key is balance. There has to be some socialism mixed with some capitolism. It cannot be one or the other. Also, there has got to be some checks and balances. The current system has failed. Greed has caused the damage. Over the last eight years, our country has been controlled by extremist factions of a pseudo-republican groups. They are not true republicans. Their ideology is very close to fascism.. It is no wonder that this year, the dems are taking the lead. The Democrats of today are somewhat like the Republicans of old. Goldwater talked about this before he died.By Raul

Do you REpublican supporters think that even if McCain gives TAX CUTS to those corporations, those corporations would stay here? Why wouldn’t they go somewhere else? Bush is giving TAX CUTS to those BIG BUSINESSES, and they still OUTSOURCE jobs. McCain wants to continue those same Bush’s policies. His economic advisor Phil Gramm called this great nation ‘NATION OF WHINERS’. That’s an INSULT to all of us. Every INDEPENDENT AGENCY and even Alan Greenspan, Republican ex-Fed chairman, said that this economy CANNOT AFFORD McCain’s TAX CUTS. Use LOGIC instead of BLINDLY SUPPORTING YOUR REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE.By Raul

Republicans are simply IGNORANT. No matter if their own candidates have ties to RADICAL AND EXTREMIST groups. They just don’t care about that. Double standards, nothing else. Republicans have caused this financial crisis since you got Bush in the White House twice and Republicans in Congress for 6 out of 8 years of Bush’s presidency. No way Democrats have to be blamed for this financial turmoil. Breaking news: Alaska panel of 10 Republicans and 4 Democrats found Palin GUILTY OF ABUSING HER EXECUTIVE POWER. You want this joker as our VP, and if something happens to McCain our president. She freaking does NOT even know what a VP does. Watch her interview after McCain elected her. This is totally RIDICULOUS.By Raul

Once again, Leslie, you have some very insightful comments to make regarding how Sen. Obama will govern. It is so interesting how pious the Dems act when their closets are stuffed with the likes of Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Jim Johnson, and all the other leaders who destroyed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but left with their big bailouts and campaign contributions. As an example of Sen. Obama’s lousy tax proposals to raise the capital gains taxes on the sale of a stock from 15% to 28%. I heard people being interviewed on radio that the big crash on Wall Street is coming because many fear that if Sen. Obama is elected they will have to pay the 28% of sale as tax. Better to take a hit now at 15% than to pay more later which discourages investment or dries up capital in businesses under an Obama Presidency. Sen. McCain wants to keep the taxes at 15%. There are many good reasons to vote for Sen. McCain including his tax proposals, comprehensive energy independence policies, his knowledge and experience with many of the world leaders, and his record of already working across the aisle successfully on landmark legislation. When Sen. Obama speaks, he keeps bashing the GOP, makes a lot of empty promises that he cannot deliver because this country is so broke, and fails to discuss the sacrifices we will all need to do to save our country. Sen. McCain talks about making this country great again by cutting spending and Sen. Obama talks about making himself great. Vote for McCain/Palin.By barking bulldog

Vote for anyone but Obama. He’s a socialist who wants to help society’s takers win big for the next four years. If you’re a loser, undereducated, made poor life choices, have a dead end job and need a union to protect your lazy, lousy work habits, and you pay no taxes now but want and deserve a “tax rebate” - he’s your man. If you put forth no real effort in life to succeed but are envious of those who work 18 hours a day to have a business and prosper he’s your guy. Just remember the other inexperience liberal we put in office - Jimmy Carter. Obama is a leftest liberal, a joke of man with nothing in his life that is an accomplishment as a leader. Vote for him and you’ll all get what you deserve. Obama never. Anyone but Obama NOBAMA!!!!!!By James

Ok I already see that there are some idiots on here commenting about Obama being anti-American. Leslie, do you actually think for one second that Obama is anti-American? He truly knows about the American dream. He was a young kid who’s parents had to risk their finances to support him and to get him into school. He raised by a single mom because his dad left him. He to this day is fighting for healthcare because his mother died of cancer because her insurance didn’t cover a pre-existing condition. I question your patriotism because you are one of the radicals in this state that would think that way of him because he is black and his name is Barack Obama. Mccain is erratic and is not fit to lead this country. He doesn’t represent the future of this nation. Obama does and he is willing to do whatever it takes for this nation to prosper in the near future. The American people need to think about the future and not the past. And if you think about the past then you’re obvious choice is Mccain who supporst Bush’s policies.By sissy2004

Leslie, even with proof of Obama American status it wouldn’t satisfy you. But it’s ok that under the American constitution that mccain is not considered an American but that’s ok with you. People vote for who you like but when you have to resort to lies, fear mongering, “kill him”, chants you have a problem and it’s not american. Pure hate and the sad part you will pass it on to children. One good thing though if all else fells I’m so proud of our young american todays. Eventually they will be the majority and wipe out the memory of those who hate.By sissy2004

John Weaver, McCain’s former top strategist, said top Republicans have a responsibility to temper this behavior. “People need to understand, for moral reasons and the protection of our civil society, the differences with Sen. Obama are ideological” Weaver said. “And from a purely practical political vantage point, please find me a swing voter, an undecided independent, or a torn female voter that finds an angry mob mentality attractive. As a party we should not and must not stand by as the small amount of haters in our society question whether he is as American as the rest of us. Shame on them and shame on us if we allow this to take hold.”By Leslie

I hear Obama wants to set the example. He does not need that expensive house. He’s going to sell it and buy a small modest home and begin redistributing his and Michelle’s wealth. Need your mortgage paid off, need to send your kid to college? Sign ups are on his website.By David

Quote from CNBC: “This credit crunch is severe but I don’t see a Great Depression. The U.S. economy is too resilient. If however Congress passes a lot of laws such as a) enormous tax increases on innovators b) protectionist legislation and c) vilifies business we are in for a lot of trouble.” Its amazing Obama wanted to tax people making over $250 a few days ago, now he has a novel idea give tax breaks to small business owners (read a lot of those people making over $250k).By Leslie

My question is this, if you give a $5,000 check for $12,000 health insurance, where does the other $7,000 come from? Further, if it goes directly to the health care company’s what is stopping them from upping the prices on premiums creating a larger gap? In local issues, what plan does McCain have to help places like Dayton? Create more small businesses like the hair and food chains that are here one day and gone the next in downtown Dayton now? I and other proud Daytonians can’t afford “THAT One”( pointing at a picture of McCain and Palin… I guess I am just not “Maverick” enough to think that knock off clothing stores and ill conceived financial plans will bail Dayton and America out of this economic crisis…By the way, if we start drilling now, we will see the first oil by the start of the 2016 olympic games…YEE HAW, by then, I just might be able to afford a rickshaw to get to and from work…wait a minute…jobs will be all gone by then,so maybe McCain’s plan is to convert GM into a richshaw plant as part of his energy conservation plan(let the poor, er..the ones that make $250,000 and more a year be the only ones be able to afford gas and cars. A vote for McCain signs Dayton’s death certificate!By CDouble13

Leslie,Thanks for reminding me exactly why I am voting for Obama this time. Your rediculous back talk and paranoia. Name for me one REAL reason why Obama is “anti-American”…oh that’s right you can’t. All you have is lies and propaganda. McCain will get in there and fix things eh. Yeah Right. Are we talking about the same McCain? The flip flopper. McCain changes his stump depending on what part of the country he’s standing in. But you trust him? OK!By Chris in Seattle

Obama we are not afraid of hard times. We are Americans we can survive, but not with you. You are part of the problem not the solution. We do not need an anti-American as our President. We do not need a man that hates capitalist America to be our President. We do not want a communist America. We are a free country and we want to remain that way. You will not fix this, you will continue down this bad road. At least McCain will get in there and undo what has been done. McCain will make sure Pelosi, Dodd, Barney and the corrupt democratic CEOs that brought our economy to its knees, will be prosecuted and punished. You Mr. Obama will do nothing but allow Barney Frank and Pelosi to continue on with their destruction of our country. Nobama!By Steve

I disagree with Senator Obama’s economic and tax plan. It does began to help our country strengthen our economy like that of “President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s efforts to get the country through the Great Depression.” As a matter of fact, Senator Obama’s plans will take jobs from the single moms and retired military who work for small businesses in order to support our families. Senator Obama’s economic and tax plan also decreases the amount of money that working men and women, can contribute to their retirement accounts. Physicians and school tutors will also be frighten of Senator Obama’s plan of the fear of earning $200,000 and falling under his tax cuts. Senator Obama should ask himself, the following questions: 1) Who will provide health care to our families? 2) Who will tutor our children in math, science and english?By A Anderson
