Alaska inquiry finding: Palin abused power
The Associated Press, in an article by Matt Apuzo, just reported that an Alaska legislative panel decided GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin unlawfully abused her power as governor in the investigation of a trooper who used to be her brother-in-law.
Here’s the just released AP story…
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Sarah Palin unlawfully abused her power as governor by trying to have her former brother-in-law fired as a state trooper, the chief investigator of an Alaska legislative panel concluded Friday. The politically charged inquiry imperiled her reputation as a reformer on John McCain’s Republican ticket.
Investigator Stephen Branchflower, in a report by a bipartisan panel that investigated the matter, found Palin in violation of a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain.
The inquiry looked into her dismissal of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan, who said he lost his job because he resisted pressure to fire a state trooper involved in a bitter divorce with the governor’s sister. Palin says Monegan was fired as part of a legitimate budget dispute.
The panel found that Palin let the family grudge influence her decision-making even if it was not the sole reason Monegan was dismissed. “I feel vindicated,” Monegan said. “It sounds like they’ve validated my belief and opinions. And that tells me I’m not totally out in left field.”
Branchflower said Palin violated a statute of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act. Palin and McCain’s supporters had hoped the inquiry’s finding would be delayed until after the presidential election to spare her any embarrassment and to put aside an enduring distraction as she campaigns as McCain’s running mate in an uphill contest against Democrat Barack Obama.
But the panel of lawmakers voted to release the report, although not without dissension.
“I think there are some problems in this report,” said Republican state Sen. Gary Stevens, a member of the panel. “I would encourage people to be very cautious, to look at this with a jaundiced eye.”
The nearly 300-page report does not recommend sanctions or a criminal investigation.

McCain was so right to pick Palin. Palin is an average American citizen, like the rest of us. The way you know she was a really good pick is all of the nasty mean vile things the Democrats keep saying about her. She has been the victim here, but she does not play the victim and she keeps taking it. Saying anything negative about Obama and wow the democrats take off with racism. But look they have gutted Palin. There are no boundaries for the democrats their attacks on Palin started the day she was announced and they just get nastier and lower by the minute. The democrats have been so threatened by her that it is funny! I appreciate Palin for being a strong woman and through these couple of months this woman has shown just how tough she is. In the meantime you democrats just keep whining and crying for how mean people are to Obama!!! Boo! Hoo!By Jim

Whoever is using mwm’s blog name, please show respect and maturity. We should all be allowed to express ourselves no matter what party we support. So far I mostly disagree with mwm’s posts, but freedom of speech needs to flourish in the media in our country, our state, and our cities. It is one of those precious rights that makes our country so great! Sarah is not playing up the “bimbo” card, but as a woman, there is no place for that kind of language or attacks on any of the candidate’s children in our discussions. No one has perfect children except maybe my grandchildren! As far as the findings of that legislative committee in Alaska, Hollis French, a Dem who endorsed Sen. Obama, headed the Committee and made an off-the-record comment that she had an “October surprise.” If Hollis French had any ethics, she would have excused herself for the bias and making such a comment. So this report was flawed. Mutual respect, fairness, and good manners should always prevail.By torp

Palin will never admit that she abused her power as Governor of Alaska. The panel found she did. She then proceeded to lie about her involvement. We do not need another Cheney. And certainly, we do not need more of Bush policies. Even if McCain were to win, he would not have unified support of the american people. In effect, McCain loses either way. Palin will never have respect in DC. She is way over her head.By truth

Palin abused her power, an ethics violation. Then lied. Typical republican. Do something wrong, then lie about it. this blog has turned hateful with people using others names. Seems that now, the honesty of the blog has been compromised. Several people are experiencing this. Obviously, a conservative got insulted and is attempting to distort public opinion. I encourage all to vote for John McCain and his wonderful running mate Sarah Palin. Unlike the Dems, Senator McCain will reform Washington. He will abolish gay marriages. He will bring honor to us internationally. He will make certain our barve men come home from Iraq with honor. He will not negotiate with rogue nations. I think anyone who wants socialism should move to France and live with the 80% Muslins there now. The economy is entirely the fault of the Democratic party. We all know that. The Dems lie, lie, lie. They blame, blame, blame. I was for Hillary, but now I proudly support John McCain. Please join me!By anghiari

If you can’t click on lnk to view the Sarah Palin recommendation letter for Wooten on this forum…I left a similar message on message board on this website and you CAN click on that link to actually see the letter. Good luck. I am sorry Palin did not have the good sense and integrity to tell us that she recommended Wooten for his job at the State Troopers and she talked about him in glowing terms. Wonder if he had ever held a safety officer’s job before ? Or if getting a letter from the Mayor of Wasilla prempted him needing a background in police work?By anghirari

One of the important things one find when reading the Troopergate report is what a smart cop Walt Mongehan is. In the report Mr. Moneghan who had been the top cop in the Anchorage Police Department was hired by Palin. A former Marine, Walt was beloved by his employees and the community. After his first encounter with Todd Palin about firing Wooten, Moneghan began getting calls from Palin, the Attorney General and a couple of other Palin state appointees and employees. Moneghan knew that it was against the law for him and any of them to discuss Wooten’s case. So when he began to get the calls before anybody could say anything…he reminded them they were at risk of creating “discoverable conversations” which means if Wooten ever sued the state for wrongful firing, he could require Moneghan to repeat these conversations which would have been illegal had Moneghan let them continue. Now even when Moneghan was getting the picture that his new job was probably on the line because he would not fire Wooten without cause, he still did his job and truth be told he saved every body’s bacon by really warning they were about to do something illegal. If he had been more like Palin, he would probably have allowed them to talk themselves into a ditch. But he was a smart, ethical man and he gave them a warning. Nobody seems to get that if he had allowed them all to talk their heads off about Wooten, he would have had more ammunition to support his allegation that Palin only fired him because he wouldn’t fire Wooten. And the other irony is we have found a glowing letter of recommendation written on behalf of Mike Wooten for a job at the State Troopers and guess who wrote it? then Mayor Sarah Palin in 2000. And she wrote what should have been a personal letter since is was for her brother in law on official Mayoral letterhead. Wrong. You do not use the power of your office to get your brother in law a job nor do you use it to get him fired!By anghiari

last night I was posting on the newspaper, the Anchorage Daily News’ website. I saw this post and copied it. I also clicked on the link in the post and lo and behold I found a letter written by the then Mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin on behalf of Mike Wooten for a job at the state troopers. Now we have an elected offical using official letterhead stationary from the office of the Mayor to get her sister’s husband a job and several years later using her power (now that he has divorced her sister) to try and get him fired. Click on the link. I removed the poster’s username because he did not give permission to use his name. And when monegan wouldn’t play her game he became a bad guy as well. Blame the victim the Sarah Failin way. I am in no way for Palin. She doesn’t represent what I believe in in any way. But, we have all been teenagers. We all know what it is like to be impulsive and full of hormones. Since we all know how babies get here, then we all know that Palin’s daughter didn’t make the baby on her own. Maybe if her parents didn’t teach abstinence only she might have know what contraceptives were and how to use them. Also, why make a situation worse by trying to force teenagers to marry. You can be a good parent and not be married. Instead, they should support the teen parents by helping them through college so that the baby can have a bright future.By ark

Fox news is about as “fair and balanced” as the diary of adolph hitler. Fox news is one sided, pro republican and anti-american. Most educated people will look at a variety of news sources, both domestic and foreign. Both left, centrist and right wing. Then, formulate opinions. The problem with Fox is that it is controlled and manipulated by Murdoch. And, Murdoch is an extremist right wing neocon. Fox news is no better than the tabloids at the checkout. Now, Palin’s ethics are in question. And, she has lied. She also agrees with Cheney’s VP powers. She is wrong and scary.By CONNIE

This presidential election is a soap opera. I have some wholesome advice for Ms. Palin. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. It would be much more impressive if she would take care of her own homelife first before attempting to rule the United States. Does anyone remember her unwed, pregnant teenage daughter ? Where was Palin when her daughter was running around ? She has offered nothing but condoling excuses for this atrocity. She is excellent at throwing mud pies, perhaps she should consider putting her soccer mom apron back on and being a real mother. She cannot rule our nation if she can’t rule her own house. Obama deals with the issues and is obviously beyond the childish name calling and slandering that this woman specializes in. May God have mercy on this nation !!By mwm

This is further proof that Palin, like Bush, confuses good government with political cronyism. “I need you to go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors,” Barack Obama told a crowd in Elko, Nev. “I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face.” Actually, Obama supporters are doing a lot more than getting into people’s faces. They seem determined to shut people up. That’s what Obama supporters, alerted by campaign emails, did when conservative Stanley Kurtz appeared on Milt Rosenberg’s WGN radio program in Chicago. Kurtz had been researching Obama’s relationship with unrepentant Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers in Chicago Annenberg Challenge papers in the Richard J. Daley Library in Chicago — papers that were closed off to him for some days, apparently at the behest of Obama supporters. Obama fans jammed WGN’s phone lines and sent in hundreds of protest emails. The message was clear to anyone who would follow Rosenberg’s example. We will make trouble for you if you let anyone make the case against The One. Other Obama supporters have threatened critics with criminal prosecution. In September, St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch and St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce warned citizens that they would bring criminal libel prosecutions against anyone who made statements against Obama that were “false.” I had been under the impression that the Alien and Sedition Acts had gone out of existence in 1801-02. Not so, apparently, in metropolitan St. Louis. Similarly, the Obama campaign called for a criminal investigation of the American Issues Project when it ran ads highlighting Obama’s ties to Ayers. These attempts to shut down political speech have become routine for liberals. Congressional Democrats sought to reimpose the “fairness doctrine” on broadcasters, which until it was repealed in the 1980s required equal time for different points of view. The motive was plain: to shut down the one conservative-leaning communications medium, talk radio. Liberal talk-show hosts have mostly failed to draw audiences, and many liberals can’t abide having citizens hear contrary views. To their credit, some liberal old-timers — like House Appropriations Chairman David Obey — voted against the “fairness doctrine,” in line with their longstanding support of free speech. But you can expect the “fairness doctrine” to get another vote if Barack Obama wins and Democrats increase their congressional majorities. Corporate liberals have done their share in shutting down anti-liberal speech, too. “Saturday Night Live” ran a spoof of the financial crisis that skewered Democrats like House Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank and liberal contributors Herbert and Marion Sandler, who sold toxic-waste-filled Golden West to Wachovia Bank for $24 billion. Kind of surprising, but not for long. The tape of the broadcast disappeared from NBC’s Website and was replaced with another that omitted the references to Frank and the Sandlers. Evidently NBC and its parent, General Electric, don’t want people to hear speech that attacks liberals. Then there’s the Democrats’ “card check” legislation, which would abolish secret ballot elections in determining whether employees are represented by unions. The unions’ strategy is obvious: Send a few thugs over to employees’ homes — we know where you live — and get them to sign cards that will trigger a union victory without giving employers a chance to be heard. Once upon a time, liberals prided themselves, with considerable reason, as the staunchest defenders of free speech. Union organizers in the 1930s and 1940s made the case that they should have access to employees to speak freely to them, and union leaders like George Meany and Walter Reuther were ardent defenders of the First Amendment. Today’s liberals seem to be taking their marching orders from other quarters. Specifically, from the college and university campuses where administrators, armed with speech codes, have for years been disciplining and subjecting to sensitivity training any students who dare to utter thoughts that liberals find offensive. The campuses that used to pride themselves as zones of free expression are now the least free part of our society. Obama supporters who found the campuses congenial and Obama himself, who has chosen to live all his adult life in university communities, seem to find it entirely natural to suppress speech that they don’t like and seem utterly oblivious to claims that this violates the letter and spirit of the First Amendment. In this campaign, we have seen the coming of the Obama thugocracy, suppressing free speech, and we may see its flourishing in the four or eight years ahead.By mwm

A quote from the article disputing the decision which the DDN conveniently forgot - “In order to violate the ethics law, there has to be some personal gain, usually financial. Mr. Branchflower has failed to identify any financial gain.” Now, lets see what the statute says - “any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that (public) trust.” So, where is the personal or financial gain? Suppose you were aware of a trooper who was drinking in his patrol car, illegally shot an animal and tasered his 10 year old step son? I sure would wonder why such a person was still on duty. Same guy files a workman’s comp claim and then goes snowmobiling? I’d want my elected official to do whatever possible to get this guy canned just like Todd Palin did. The issue in the report said Sarah should have stopped him from making those inquiries. Thats about as weak as it gets. Why didn’t the committee recommend further action? Because they know they have nothing - they just wanted to get this out there to try and embarass. You will note that it wasn’t unanimous - one lawmaker recommend reviewing the report with a jandiced eye. This is an attempt at a political lynching by both parties in Alaska. Its what you expect from Democrats because thats just who they are. One only need to read their posts to see what a angry and nasty bunch of folks some are; but, because Palin went against Republicans they too were gunning for her. It shows just how corrupt the political system is. Actually this somewhat enhances her credentials as someone who will buck the system and try to do the right thing. The E mails released showing Monegan going behind her back seeking funds he had been denied reflects a just cause for dismissal. Now, based on the comments here, I realize in the eyes of some trying to get a rotten egg who claims to be a law enforcement officer canned is a bad thing but promoting the corruption which is seen in ACORN, Fannie and Freddie is OK. Why, well of course because Democrats are involved in the ACORN, Freddie and Fannie stuff and that can be overlooked. What harm did it do except drop the DJIA some 35% or so; but, heaven forbid we say anything bad about someone who tasered his adolecent step son.By Stephen'sKimberly

Palin goes and gives a major speech on the subject on “sexism.” The inquiry by the Dem legislature is as flawed as the ACORN voting program. Good for Sarah, if you are going to have a ethics complaint in your file, I am glad she got it for defending her 10 year old step son who got tasered by someone unfit to be a police officer and his boss who was not accountable for the incident. At least, we are not talking about billions of US taxpayers dollars lost at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac!By mwm

The McCain campaign has now blamed Obama supporters for Palin being found to have abused her power. It just shows how insane the McCain campaign is. Get real, Palin abused her power and got caught.By warren

McCain had so many capable women to pick…why he selected this bimbo is a mystery. I hope the right wing idiots are satisfied. And shame on McCain for pandering to these lunatics.By warren

Typical. A republican that abuses their power. Very typical.
