NBC may be scaling back their programming

In these tough economic times NBC is doing some hard thinking about the future and what they need to do to save it. The Associated Press is reporting that NBC’s Chief Executive Jeff Zucker is considering scaling back the number of hours they air programming.

So what does this mean to you? It’s too early to tell. I doubt this will lead to the axing of any of their current popular TV shows, but you never know. There are a lot of easy fixes they could make:

  • Trim ‘Today’: The popular(?) morning show recently expanded to give it even more air time. This tells me that it must be doing well, but I can’t understand why. This show is just a bunch of fluff. It has no substance. I get the feeling, however, that I am not the target audience which is probably why I can’t stand it. Despite my personal feelings, this 4 hour show needs to go back to 2 hours. I don’t care if you have enough advertising to justify 4 hours, it just doesn’t make sense.
  • Nothing after 1 a.m.: Say goodbye to ‘Poker After Dark’ and ‘Last Call with Carson Daly.’ Don’t get me wrong, I love watching people play poker. No really, I’m serious. But how many people who love poker are awake after 1 a.m.? Now Carson Daly, on the other hand, should never have been given his own show in the first place. Who watches this loser, anyway? He’s dead behind the eyes and boring as hell.
  • Infomercials: I hate infomercials just like any other guy, but they pay the bills. Run them whenever you can.
  • Soap operas: I know that soaps are popular with middle-aged women but that’s only because they are addicted to them. End all the various story lines in a nice happy way and then cancel the show. It will take time for the women to get over their withdrawals but they will be better people for it. With the time they used to spend watching soaps they could now spend it watching infomercials and buying useless things they don’t need. It’s win, win.

Of course some of my ideas will never happen but they would probably save NBC some quick cash.

Do you have any ideas on how NBC could scale back their programming and save money? How do you think this will affect what you watch if at all?

I would advise doing about five seconds of research before posting. One of the shows you suggested cutting isn’t financed by NBC. Irresponsible “journalism” on your part.
