TV Premiere week: Part 2 - The Office & Ugly Betty
So my friends told me that they laughed hysterically after the beginning scene of “The Office” where Michael hits Meredith with his car but for some reason Zack and I just exclaimed “Oh my god!” But as far as the whole Pam/Jim relationship goes, I loved having Kevin mimic the audience’s reactions to their proclamations that they weren’t dating, “Are you kidding me!?” Do you think it was right for Dwight to kill Angela’s cat? That Michael took his hitting of a coworker with a car and turned it into Michael Scott’s Dunder Mifflin Scranton Meredith Palmer Memorial Celebrity Rabies Awareness Pro-Am Fun Run Race for the Cure is just one more reason this show is so smart.
I wanted to watch “Ugly Betty” last year but “The Office” and “Smallville” were on at the same time and the DVR can only handle two simultaneous recordings at a time. But this year I think NBC has moved “The Office” to 9pm and that means I should be able to DVR “Ugly Betty.” Zack and I are currently watching the first season on DVD but I went ahead and watched the second season premiere.
I couldn’t believe the cruelly deceptive Hilda/Santos dream sequence. I was so confused to see him alive after what happened in the finale but then it turned out he wasn’t alive and that she was just wishing he was. It was very heartbreaking. I was glad to see Henry at the end of the episode back in NY but I am getting sick of him tugging at Betty’s heartstrings. If he wants to be with Betty, he’s got to completely ditch that ex-girlfriend. If he is back in town because he learned that his ex-’s baby wasn’t his, then all is well, but if he just abandoned her to be with Betty, what does that say about his character? I loved the other twist about Alexis forgetting she got a sex change and thinking that she’s Alex again. Though that does imply that transgendered people could be ‘fixed’ or that their feeling of being the opposite gender is a learned behavior, but maybe I am reading too much into this. They probably just did this to the character to have a very interesting side story. In the preview for next week’s episode, ‘Alex’ looks at ‘his’ breasts and gives a thumbs-up to his brother so I guess he isn’t too upset to find out that he became a woman. We’ll just have to see…

Re: Ugly Betty: I too was crushed by the deceptive Hilda/Santos storyline. So SAD! I guess I’m gullible for believing it though… I think the Alex/Alexis thing is just memory loss from the coma. I mean look at Desperate Housewives. In season 3, Mike is in the coma forever and when he does wake up he doesn’t remember the last like 2 years. He only remembers moving to Wisteria Lane, but nothing after that. As for Henry. I have a hunch Betty’s stronger than that now. I just think she might be strong enough now to tell him to get lost. With everything happening in her family (Santos’ death, her dad still in Mexico, etc.) she doesn’t need his added drama. But then again, that’s what makes interesting TV. So we shall see.By Tony

Zack and I haven’t been keeping up with Desperate Housewives. He saw part of a recap episode of season 3 and wants to start watching again, but we were having trouble getting through the awful season 2. I guess we will have to finish 2 and 3 now.
