‘Brokeback’ will hit Columbus before New Year

This just in from my buddy Anthony, in an e-mail entitled, “Fun on the Ranch”: “Just heard that Brokeback Mountain is coming to Columbus on Dec. 30 at the Drexel Gateway. Not coming to Dayton till Mid January.” A call to the Gateway confirms this.

Though the Neon’s website reports that Brokeback will now open there on January 6, a week earlier than its original date, January 13.

Maybe I won’t have to head off to New York after all…

Update (8:29 p.m.): The Gateway will have a special midnight showing of Brokeback on the evening of the 29th.

Hooray! NYC is probably a bad idea anyways, considering the transit strike.

It’s true! BROKEBACK will open at THE NEON on January 6…Only ONE WEEK behind the much bigger movie-going city of Columbus. Good movies make their way to Dayton…however, Daytonians don’t always support good movies.

Get the good movies here in a timely manner and we’ll support them. If they’re late, we go to Columbus or Cincinnati to see them while they’re fresh.

Well put, Mike. I’d much rather drive 20 minutes to see a good movie than drive an hour for it.

It’s like the old adage of what came first, the chicken or the egg…. when folks opt to patronize out-of-town theaters because they want to see films early, the Miami Valley doesn’t produce the box office numbers to convince studios to consider us a priority release location. Therefore, limited-print art house and independent movies tend to open in the Miami Valley later than the cities that are proven bigger $$$ generators. Only way to turn the studios’ perception around is for people to spend their movie ticket money in the Dayton area. But many don’t want to wait. So…… egg? chicken?

Well… THE NEON is back to January 13 for BROKEBACK. After BROKEBACK opened in 200 additional markets last week, numbers were quite mediocre. Focus, the film’s distributor, has gone back to its original strategy for smaller markets (distributors consider us quite small in terms of box office). Seems that even though there are pockets of people eagerly awaiting the film, it’s still not a blockbuster…and they believe that word-of-mouth and more aclaim will be better for Dayton.
