Do you favor the Mason fire levy?

Mason is asking voters to approve an additional 2-mill fire levy on Nov. 4. The city needs the extra $2 million staff a third fire house and meet current expenses. Voters turned down the additional levy during a special election in August. Are you willing to say yes this time? If so please tell why and if not, why not?

Who should replace Todd Wurzbacher?

The Mason City Council is in the process of selecting a successor for Councilman Todd Wurzbacher who has resigned his seat. The city received resumes from 10 interested candidates. They are: Douglas Adkins, Middletown city prosecutor; Joan Barnhill, a customs broker; David Bratslavsky, a teacher and former special assistant in the U.S. Department of the Interior’s budget office; Richard Cox, who owns Al’s Heating Service; Tom Hudepohl, a construction contractor; Todd Hudson, Wildflower Cafe owner; Shannon Marcum, a finance manager for Procter & Gamble; David Nichols, retired CEO for Interlott Technologies; Scott Pierce, regional manager for Present United Electric Controls; and Lori Shutrump, senior sales specialist for Tibotec Therapeutics, Johnson & Johnson. Does anybody have a preference?

Mason Fire Levy

There are a lot of bloggers out there blasting the city council for wasting taxpayer money on things like the sports park, downtown and the community center. City officials say they need to pass the fire levy in order keep things status quo. The additional 2 mill levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $70 more a year. Are you in favor of the fire levy? How important is improving response times?

Downtown Mason revitalization - can it happen?

I wrote a story last week about how parking has become a source of hard feelings between some city officials and downtown businesses. But hard feeling aside, what is the answer to revitalizing downtown? Councilman Victor Kidd is rolling up his sleeves, actively courting businesses and restaurants. He says other businesses must also join the effort, but he notes there is a “me, me” mentality that is road blocking parking solutions and other progress. So, please tell me your thoughts on what is needed to jump start downtown.

deerfield Twp. zoning issues

The Deerfield Twp. trustees are supposed to give a first reading on residential zoning changes that will add transitional uses in the Fields Ertel cooridor. About 50 people showed up at a special meeting last week to protest the changes. The Deerfield Zoning Commission denied the zoning changes in June. It would take a unanimous vote of the trustees to override the zoning commission. What do you think? You can view the changes on the township website at: http://www.deerfieldtwp.com/departments/zoningdepartment/zoningdepartment.htm

New skate park ideas

Mason city officials are talking about talking to Butler County officials about a joint skate park venture. The city shelved plans for its own park last year, because of cost overruns and the inability to strike a deal with Deerfield Twp. Township officials said they should have been part of the discussion, not just cost sharing. Officials are thinking a skate park might be a nice addition to the 435-acre Voice of America Park in West Chester Twp. What do you think?

Mad Hatter Day

Mad Hatter

Mad Hatter Day is a day to do and say things that are usually considered absurd, but actually are very logical; and to avoid things that are considered normal, but are actually quite ludicrous. Kinda confusing, so today it should make perfect sense. Celebrate this mad holiday by doing…pretty much whatever you want. Things to do »

Get in the Halloween spirit with a ghost hunt or a haunted house tour [things to do]

Haunted House Waynesville

Perhaps you've heard stories from Room No. 4 at the Hammel House in downtown Waynesville — the site of a gruesome 19th-century murder. Or maybe you've heard tales from the Friends (Quaker) Meeting House. A candlelight flickers in the window, perhaps signaling long-dead conductors on the Underground Railroad. With more than 30 haunted houses, Chris Woodyard of Beavercreek, author of the "Haunted Ohio" book series, says Waynesville is easily the "most haunted town in Ohio." Call and schedule a haunted tour, and maybe you'll spot some ghosts. More »

The Melting Pot in Washington Twp. [review]

Whether you're looking for a new spot for a date, a night out with the girls or whatever, The Melting Pot offers delicious fondue fun for everyone at its first area location in Washington Twp. The Melting Pot's fondue dining concept is certainly distinctive. Here, the diners are the chefs. For chocolate enthusiasts — and my sense is, there are many of you — dessert here is a gooey slice of heaven. More »
