TweetDetails about The Vault revealed
Some myth busting about The Vault, opening soon at 20 N. Jefferson St.
Anyone expecting to walk into The Vault in September - no official opening date set yet, so stay tuned! - and see the former c}space with a bar plunked in the middle will be pleasantly surprised to discover a complete transformation of the space.
I got a sneak peak at the new entertainment venue on Tuesday, and although there is still a lot of work to be done, the amenities taking shape are very promising.
Owners Darryl Kinney, Jason Todd and Hopson Bell have put more than a quarter of a million dollars into the venue which is shaping up to be one part dance club, one part theater and one part sports bar.
Gone are the graffiti colored walls and in their place are a huge DJ booth and soon to be mirrored cat walk towering over a spacious dance floor. An expansive wrap-around bar with several wheelchair accessible sections dominates the middle of the space and maintains the old bank vault door that makes it so iconic. And taking shape currently is one of the coolest VIP areas Dayton has ever seen. (I can actually imagine celebs wanting to hang out on the white leather couches with a one-way secret window view of the action on the dance floor.)
I promised I wouldn’t give away all their secrets just yet, but I’ll just say that this place has the potential to transition from a happy hour snacks and sports crowd to a live jazz performance to a late night dance spot in the space of one night without missing a beat.
The beats will be provided by a mixture of DJs and live performers of all styles - no juke box in sight.
General Manager Mitchell Stanford said he envisions endless entertainment possibilities from performances on the baby-grand piano that will grace the stage to fight nights on the big screen, to Zumba fitness sessions and more.
“They want this to be a place for adults to come any night of the week and there’s something going on,” said Tammy Tumblison, the realtor with Dayton Commercial Realty who leased the space.
Todd and Bell also own local HVAC company Kool Breeze while Kinney runs construction firm DAK Construction. They are handling most of the upgrades to the space themselves. Kinney also has experience working in and running nightclubs in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Dayton, previously owning the Majestic Lounge in the late ‘90s and Brittany’s Pub.
Tumblison said the group has met with the Downtown Priority Board and realizes that there are security concerns attached to any new nightlife venue in the city. To that end they say they have hired an experienced security staff, all of whom have attended the Dayton Police Department’s bar training course. Kinney said they have also met with Major Larry Faulkner, commander of the Central Business District, to discuss security concerns and will be using metal detecting wands at the door. A strict dress code and age restriction will also be in place, most likely 25 and over or 30 and over for the majority of events.
“These men are husbands and fathers and businessmen, genuinely not interested in any drama,” Tumblison said.
What do you think? Does The Vault sound like someplace you’ll be checking out?

TweetThe dish on two possible new clubs in Dayton
You’ve probably heard the same rumors and rumblings we have about two new clubs supposedly opening soon in Dayton.
Here’s what we know so far and a promise of more details coming soon!
The Vault or Club Vault Various versions of a coming soon sign have been up on the building at 20 N. Jefferson St. for months and we’ve been assured this “upscale” club is opening this fall. But there is still no opening date officially set for the dance club taking up the former c}space.
A few weeks ago an employee said the club’s furniture had not been delivered yet. Their website clubvaultdayton.com has an employment application available for download and says that they are hiring.
According to their Facebook page the club will cater to a “more mature and polished crowd” and feature 6,500 square feet of entertainment including three VIP rooms, a catwalk, billiards, and free WiFi among other amenities.
The rumor mill seems convinced that this will be a “hip-hop” club, but their advertising so far does not indicate a loyalty to just hip-hop music.
Potential pros: The club’s location - right next to Masque - ensures that lots of club-goers will check it out. Having a major dance club competitor so close will hopefully cut down on the lines outside Masque on Wednesday nights.
Potential cons: The parking situation in the area is already precarious on nights when Masque is packed and has attracted some crime to the adjacent parking lots. A mass influx of more people could lead to some overcrowding issues and headaches for downtown police.
Can’t wait to see: If the club can live up to its “upscale” hype. Without an actual age limit of 25 and over it may be hard to maintain the type of atmosphere they are going for. Also a big thumbs up on the free WiFi!

Club Allure
The former Foundry space, 26 Wyandot St., is apparently getting another new incarnation.
A grand opening of Sept. 10 has been announced for the Top 40 dance club which will supposedly bring big events, celebrities and “never been done before themes” to the Dayton club scene.
According to their Facebook page they are hiring for bartenders, bouncers, shot girls, cocktail waitresses, dancers, DJ’s, and promoters.
Potential pros: Another club will add more heft to the Third Street offerings currently consisting of just Therapy Cafe and a few shops. The location more closely ties together Third Street and the Oregon District. With even more apartments rumored to be going in across from the Cannery soon and the new Olive restaurant open, Allure could be part of making the Wayne/Third corner a new go-to destination downtown.
Potential cons: Since The Foundry’s closing in 2008 the space had only a brief stint at Afterburn Nightclub from August to December 2009, mainly because of a lack of liquor permit. The Foundry was only there for four years before that, begging the question of whether the spot is well suited for a dance club. The building is enormous at 12,000 square feet with 40 foot ceilings. It will be a challenge to make the place not feel empty with less than a couple hundred people inside.
Can’t wait to see: If the club can follow through on its promise of big events and celeb appearances. For the record we don’t consider contestants from unknown reality shows to be celebrities. And unless Joe Francis is actually there, the Girls Gone Wild bus showing up does not count as a big event.
