Details about The Vault revealed
Some myth busting about The Vault, opening soon at 20 N. Jefferson St.
Anyone expecting to walk into The Vault in September - no official opening date set yet, so stay tuned! - and see the former c}space with a bar plunked in the middle will be pleasantly surprised to discover a complete transformation of the space.
I got a sneak peak at the new entertainment venue on Tuesday, and although there is still a lot of work to be done, the amenities taking shape are very promising.
Owners Darryl Kinney, Jason Todd and Hopson Bell have put more than a quarter of a million dollars into the venue which is shaping up to be one part dance club, one part theater and one part sports bar.
Gone are the graffiti colored walls and in their place are a huge DJ booth and soon to be mirrored cat walk towering over a spacious dance floor. An expansive wrap-around bar with several wheelchair accessible sections dominates the middle of the space and maintains the old bank vault door that makes it so iconic. And taking shape currently is one of the coolest VIP areas Dayton has ever seen. (I can actually imagine celebs wanting to hang out on the white leather couches with a one-way secret window view of the action on the dance floor.)
I promised I wouldn’t give away all their secrets just yet, but I’ll just say that this place has the potential to transition from a happy hour snacks and sports crowd to a live jazz performance to a late night dance spot in the space of one night without missing a beat.
The beats will be provided by a mixture of DJs and live performers of all styles - no juke box in sight.
General Manager Mitchell Stanford said he envisions endless entertainment possibilities from performances on the baby-grand piano that will grace the stage to fight nights on the big screen, to Zumba fitness sessions and more.
“They want this to be a place for adults to come any night of the week and there’s something going on,” said Tammy Tumblison, the realtor with Dayton Commercial Realty who leased the space.
Todd and Bell also own local HVAC company Kool Breeze while Kinney runs construction firm DAK Construction. They are handling most of the upgrades to the space themselves. Kinney also has experience working in and running nightclubs in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Dayton, previously owning the Majestic Lounge in the late ‘90s and Brittany’s Pub.
Tumblison said the group has met with the Downtown Priority Board and realizes that there are security concerns attached to any new nightlife venue in the city. To that end they say they have hired an experienced security staff, all of whom have attended the Dayton Police Department’s bar training course. Kinney said they have also met with Major Larry Faulkner, commander of the Central Business District, to discuss security concerns and will be using metal detecting wands at the door. A strict dress code and age restriction will also be in place, most likely 25 and over or 30 and over for the majority of events.
“These men are husbands and fathers and businessmen, genuinely not interested in any drama,” Tumblison said.
What do you think? Does The Vault sound like someplace you’ll be checking out?

I do hope, as a casual cluber, this will not be another shoot out bar.

What celebrities? In Dayton? Puhleeez. Also, people who sit in V.I.P. sections want to be seen by people who aren’t in the V.I.P. section. The 25-30 and over thing is pretty stupid also.

Sounds like someone is in that 18-24 age range… I think it is a great idea to have age restrictions in night clubs. Those of us already past the age of 24 know that we acted differently, for the most part, from ages 18-24. Just my opinion.

Sounds interesting. I will try it out at least once. As long as the cover is not like Masque. It is too high and the drinks are too expensive and week. If the Vault can overcome that, it will be a good place. It is a little off topic, but no bar should be charging cover Sun-Thu. in Dayton. People just can’t afford that. What is the dress code at Vault?

I’m excited about the upcoming club. The age restrictions are very smart. There are still people like myself who love to go to and see live entertainment in a place that I can dress to impress (chic, classy and upscale).

I’m proud of my people finally coming with something legally ran, evolving from legal money… There’s so many other races of people owning our community, but barely any of us owning parts of our own neighbourhoods… I will support…From The Soul LLC….

im optimistic. sounds like to potential for a really nice time out in downtown. i am also familiar with thier previous nightclubs “majestics and brittany’s” and they left alot to be desired as far as security is concerned. do hopefully this is not a front and they learned from their MANY mistakes. do some research on the previous venues and the crime associated with both of them. not hatin’ though. i too have matured since the early 90’s when i frequented their establishments

Just a note on the comment about crime at Majestics. Mr. Kinney informed me that he sold the club in 2001. The violent incidents most notably associated with that bar occurred after his tenure as owner.

Does the dance club have a real dance floor or just a kitchen table size floor like other bars?

Sorry for the late response… @Mike: The dance floor is pretty spacious. It’s definitely bigger than say, the upstairs dance area at Newcom’s. Plus there is additional space for dancing in front of the stage. It’s not the whole floor like at Masque or Hammerjax, but there will be plenty of space to get your dance on.

Ah, sounds nice except I’d like the age to be a little lower…21, 23, even 24…bet you couldn’t guess my age, huh?

I’m excited! As a NYer who has the misfortune of being stuck in OH for grad school, I’m desperate for a classy, but still fun club in the dyt. I would suggest that the age restriction not be 30 and over. That’s ridiculous and would bar people such as myself from being able to attend. I’m 26, btw! And the person who said there are no celebrities in dayton, that’s not true. I met Dave Chappelle at Sidebar this past weekend.
