Celebrations abound this Fifth Day of May
Hopefully, we’ll see April showers giving way to May flowers soon.
Even if the rain continues, the first week of May is always this Lounge Lizard’s favorite, not because I happen to turn a year older — again — but because it’s Cinco de Mayo time!
Cinco de Mayo is a very special holiday invented in days of yore by the fine people of Mexico as an excuse for Americans to cut out of work early and drink margaritas. Eating lots of chips and salsa, tacos and chimichangas also is encouraged, all washed down with a Dos Equis or two.
Donning a sombrero and fake mustache and acting silly seems to also be acceptable on this one day a year.
(Please know that none of this behavior is in any way meant to be offensive to our Mexican neighbors to the south. Just ask the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day or the Australians during Happy Hour at Outback Steakhouse. Getting drunk on your holiday is America’s way of showing we care.)
The Dayton Ballet Barre Association is hosting a Cinco de Mayo Bar Crawl to raise funds in support of the Dayton Ballet. For $10, participants will get discounted prices on drinks at each of five Oregon District bars. Find an organizer at whichever stop you join for a wristband.
The schedule:
Oregon Express: 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Tumbleweed Connection: 7 to 8 p.m.
Lucky’s: 8 to 9 p.m.
The Trolley Stop: 9 to 10 p.m.
The Dublin Pub: 10 to 11 p.m.
Participants are encouraged to wear their sombreros, ponchos and other Cinco de Mayo garb for a chance at a best-dressed prize allegedly worth 1,000 Pesos. That’s about $86 here in the U.S.A., so still pretty worth it.
When: 5:30 p.m., May 5
Where: Meet at Oregon Express, 336 E. Fifth St., Dayton
The bite: $10
More info: Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Barre, please contact Jade Smarda at jsmarda@ficlaw.com.
South Beach is giving out prizes for the hottest Senoritas. All ladies get in free before 11 p.m. and everyone can toast the “holiday” with $2 domestic beer, $3 well drinks, $4 bombs and $2 Jello Shots and Shooters.
When: 9 p.m., May 5
Where: South Beach Night Club, 729 Lyons Road, Centerville
The bite: Ladies free until 11 p.m., ages 18 and older welcome, cover charge varies.
Boston’s Bistro and Pub is offering beer and pizza special this Cinco de Mayo. For $19, you get two pints of Dos Equis beer and any 12-inch pizza. They’ll also have special pricing on Hungarian bottles of wine, specialty Mexican pizzas and nachos. Wear a Mexican costume and be entered in a drawing for a five-person pizza party.
When: Open at 3 p.m. May 5
Where: Boston’s Bistro and Pub, 7500 N. Main St., Dayton
The bite: No cover
Of course we can’t forget the place that counts down all year to their annual Cinco de Mayo Bash.
The party starts early with Channel 94.5 broadcasting live from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Live music starts at 3 p.m. with Dustin Vincent.
Headliners this year are party band The Naked Karate Girls from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. followed by a DJ until close.
Drink specials include $4 Coronas, Corona Light, and Landshark beers and $5 margaritas. Plus they have games and contests all day long.
When: 11 a.m. May 5
Where: Adobe Gila’s, 78 Plum St., Beavercreek
The bite: No cover
More best bets for Cinco de Mayo fun:
El Meson in West Carrollton is opening at 3 p.m. and will offer free Tapas, $1 Tequila shots and $2 Margaritas from an ice luge until 5:30 p.m. Their party continues all night and through Saturday with special food and drink prices, music and dancing.
You can’t go wrong with an original Bad Juan Margarita at Elsa’s. They have four locations, all of which will be full of fiesta-goers this Cinco de Mayo.
Carmel’s Southwest Grill is throwing a patio party with live music and drink specials.
