Plan your St. Patrick’s Day shenanigans
You’ve still got a whole day to plan for the greenest day of the year! And whether you want to rise early with an Irish breakfast, party all afternoon to live music and dance performances, or are heading out after work for some late night green beer, Dayton has a party (of five) for you.

One thing to note: We inaccurately printed in last Friday’s Go! and ActiveDayton print edition that Peach’s Grill in Yellow Springs was having a St. Patrick’s Day party Thursday including breakfast and live music. Unfortunately that party was last Saturday. Totally our bad! Although you missed the official St. Patty’s event, the bar will be open their normal hours - 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday if you’d like to stop in.
Now that that’s out of the way, some important dos and don’ts to make your St. Patty’s Day the best ever!
Don’t get pinched!
While some people choose to go all out on St. Patrick’s Day and dress as leprechauns or green fairies, most of us will pick out a few green items to spice up our wardrobe. You didn’t see these looks on the runways at New York’s Fashion Week, but on St. Patrick’s Day, they’re just the ticket to get you noticed and avoid the dreaded pinch for not wearing green.
Shamrock sunglasses: St. Patrick’s Day is one of the few days it’s acceptable to wear your sunglasses at night without looking like a poser. I’ve seen people wearing green-tinted aviators or other fashionable glasses, but why not go all out and rock the shamrocks? Also awesome — “beer goggle” glasses.
Green beads: Since Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day fall so close together, it’s only natural to extend the fun of colored beads another week or so. Although not an official St. Patty’s Day tradition, we believe the same rules of bead-giving apply to girls drunk on Guinness as girls drunk on Hurricanes. Also awesome — green beaded necklace with a shot glass on the end. You never lose your cup!
Clever T-shirts and buttons: The options are endless to express your sense of humor on St. Patrick’s Day, from the classic “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” and “Irish Today, Hungover Tomorrow” to a personal favorite, “Does this clover make me look Drunk?” Also awesome — Green suspenders to pin your St. Patty’s flair on.
Shamrock boxers or pajama pants: Nothing says I’m committed to drinking all day than wearing your comfy drinking pants. There is no need to dress nice on St. Patty’s Day. Also awesome — Vintage Zubaz. Elastic waistband provides plenty of give when you eat too much corned beef and cabbage.
And finally a St. Patrick’s Day fashion Do and Don’t: Ladies, DON’T wear high heels. A broken ankle will ruin your fun and the fun of the friend who has to carry you to Miami Valley Hospital.
Guys, DO wear a shirt. Although the idea of painting your chest hair green may seem awesome, the person stuck in a crowded beer line next to you doesn’t think so. Also it’s Ohio and it’s March, which means it’s cold and you’re pale.
Don’t get arrested!

I learned this statement in a bar in Key West that had an Irish guitarist playing that evening. He said it can be used as a statement of alarm/amazement/surpsise. Say these four words very quickly…fast…as fast as you can…run them together…and you’ll be on your way to an Irish accent. Here are the words: WHALE>>>>OIL>>>>BEEF>>>>HOOKED.
