Do you have the best home brew? Enter contest

Attention all home brewers: Put your best creation before a panel of judges, and you could win some serious bragging rights, plus some other cool prizes.

In conjunction with Oktoberfest — Sept. 26-27 at the Dayton Art Institute, 456 Belmonte Park North — the DAI is sponsoring a Home Brew Beer Contest.

The contest is for home brewers of beer made with non-commercial equipment. Judging will be conducted by a panel of non-professional judges in three categories: Pale Ale/India Pale Ale, Wheat Beers (German or American) and Porter/Stout. The first place winner and runner-up in each category will compete for Best in Show, according to contest organizers.

Each category will also be judged for Best Label, with those winners taking part in the Best in Show judging.

The fee is $25 per entry. Prizes include:

  • Each first-place winner will receive a large Oktoberfest mug and qualify for the Best in Show tasting. Each runner-up will be eligible for the Best in Show tasting.

  • The winner of the Best Label in each category will receive a small Oktoberfest mug and qualify for Best in Show.

  • A Best in Show winner will be selected based on a second tasting of all first-place, runner-up and best label brews in each category (up to nine brews). Best in Show will receive a Warsteiner Glass Beer Boot (and bragging rights of course).

Contest rules, registration forms and more information are available at www.daytonartinstitute.org.

What’s with the $25 entry fee? That’s very high compared to most competitions.

I’m glad to see the DAI adding this contest to their Oktoberfest lineup. The $25 entry fee does seem steep, especially when the total prize lineup consists of three large mugs, three small mugs, and the Warsteiner beer boot. As I recall, a large mug costs $35 and comes with a beer ticket. Are the fees and prizes commensurate with other home brew contests?

To address the high entrance fee comments: please remember, this supports the Dayton Art Institute. We’re still figuring out if you’ll be able to deduct a portion of the entrance fee from your taxes.

And won’t most people have already purchased a mug before the prize mugs are awarded? I can’t speak for everyone but buying a beer mug is the first thing I do.

The first round prizes (mugs) will be awarded before the event. The winners will be notified and they will be able to pick up their prizes starting on Saturday at the start of the event (Friday if they plan on attending the Preview Party). The only prize that will be awarded and given out on Sunday will be the Warsteiner boot. The winner of the Best in Show should have plenty of time to fill that up at least once, if not twice (along with whatever mug they won from the first round). Jeremy, keep up the questions and hopefully you’re planning a visit to a local home brew store (say Belmont Party Supply) to get your recipe started.

Good information. I’m brewing mid-August and will indeed visit Belmont Party Supply prior to doing so. I’m a very occasional brewer so I’ll steer clear of the contest. But I always look forward to Oktoberfest and certainly appreciate the expanded draft beer selection there.

This looks like a fun opportunity. Everyone needs to start brewing soon as there is a limit of 15 entries per category. Cheers!

I’m also an occasional home brewer but I wanted to say how nice and exciting it is to have a contest of this type here locally. Especially in conjunction with supporting the DAI! Thanks & keep the great ideas coming!

$25 to enter a beer contest? It ought to at least include admission to the Oktoberfest. All this to win a mug which anyone can buy?? Can I buy an Emmy or Oscar? Pretty screwey.

$25 fee for the chance to win a $5 mug? No Thanks!

The Miami Valley is enriched with certified beer judges if needed. Also, Dayton’s homebrew club DRAFT is having their annual national home brew competition Sep 12. Go to schwartzbeer.com or daytondraft.org for details. Everone should support DAI
