TweetSnuggie Pub Crawl comes to Dayton
We’ve written about Snuggie Pub Crawls happening out of town, but now one is coming to town and it’s for a good cause.
A Snuggie Pub Crawl will be held in the Oregon Arts District Saturday, April 18, beginning at 8 p.m. The cost is $10 per person with proceeds going to benefit The Seedling Foundation in support of Stivers School for the Arts.
Featuring the — in our opinion — ridiculously ridiculous as-seen-on-TV blanket with sleeves, Snuggie Pub Crawls have been held throughout the country. Visit www.snuggiepubcrawls.com for more information. Organizers for Dayton’s Snuggie pub crawl report that participants are encouraged to decorate their Snuggies and that blankets, backward robes and designer Snuggies or Snuggie knock-offs are welcome. A contest will be held for the most creatively decked-out Snuggie with judging taking place at 10:30 p.m. at The Trolley Stop
The schedule for Dayton’s Snuggie Pub Crawl is: 8 p.m. Oregon Express; 9 p.m. Blind Bob’s; 10 p.m. Trolley Stop; 11 p.m. Dublin Pub; at 11:45 p.m., sober up afterwards at Jazzy Java with coffee and live jazz.
Snuggies can be acquired at Walgreens Stores or ordered online at www.getsnuggie.com.

TweetSouth Park Pizza Tavern reviewed
Located at the corners of Wayne and Oak streets in the South Park Historic District, South Park Pizza Tavern’s combination of savory, steaming pizza pies and cool craft beers makes it a destination worth checking out.
Since acquiring the building and opening for business more than a year-and-a-half ago, owner Bill Daniels has been busy making improvements to the existing structure, most noticeably adding a large, well-lit outdoor patio area perfect for the coming summer months. Inside, the bar area was moved to a far wall, opening up an area for bands to showcase their music and moving seating closer to the kitchen to help improve service. Painted in a bright yellow, much of the decor on the walls of South Park Pizza Tavern reflects Daniels’ love for ice hockey.

Something equally important, but not as obvious to an untrained eye, is the craft beer selection. The bar is adding equipment to be able to pour 12 more draft beers in addition to the existing six for a grand total of 18 beers on tap. Manager Shaine Sullivan reports that he expects it to be done by the end of the week. The bar also features around 70 varieties of bottled beers to tempt your palette, with plans to add another bottle cooler and 20-25 additional craft bottled beers, according to Daniels.
With just six beers on tap during our visits, the Lounge Lizards went with a creamy New Holland Dragon’s Milk. If beer isn’t your thing, South Park Pizza Tavern offers a dozen types of wine. The bar does not serve hard liquor.
Daniels’ influence is evident just by looking at the menu — not surprising for those who know he also owns Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory. The South Park Pizza Tavern menu features more than 22 pizzas in four sizes ranging from a small (9-inch) to an extra large (16-inch) priced from $5.35 to $19.95. A few other selections can be found on the appetizer menu, most notably the South Park Pizza Tavern’s wings.
The Lounge Lizards chose to try both the spicy garlic and the Jamaican baked wings ($6.95 for 10). The spicy garlic was just as the name would have you believe — spicy and garlicky. There was just enough sauce to flavor the wings but not too much to overpower them. The Jamaican sauced wings were sweet and tangy with just a hint of heat. Alexis couldn’t get enough of the wings sauce. Both Lizards thought the wings were a little scrawny and could have benefited from a few more weeks of fattening on the farm.
But the true charm of South Park Pizza Tavern is the pizza — it’s in the name after all. If you’re traveling in a group, we recommend getting several small pizzas to share.
Our not-to-be-missed favorite was the cheeseburger pizza, topped with ground beef, onions, tomatoes, bacon, pickles, pizza sauce and cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. Here’s where the small-sized pizza pays off: With a nearly perfect crust to ingredient ratio, if you don’t look at what you’re eating, it tastes like a really interesting burger.

While our second pizza, the Greek Gyro Pizza, sounded exotic (and we loved the originality), the depth of flavors present in the cheeseburger, Santa Fe and Incredible Factory Special pies kept our interest longer.
Topped with roasted corn salsa, black beans, grilled chicken, green peppers, tomatoes and onions, the Santa Fe is a zippy trip through south-of-the-border flavor profiles. The Incredible Factory Special is the classic go-to supreme formula with a couple of twists featuring pepperoni, sausage, fresh ground beef, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, olives and banana peppers.
What does the future hold for South Park? Daniels would like to, “expand a little bit, create almost a BW-3’s with a family and adult side double or triple the size of the existing dining room.”
Daniels went on to say that he would like to add lunch and expand the South Park Tavern’s menu sometime in the future to something that more closely resembles the Pizza Factory’s full menu.
Daniels also reports that he’s in the process of exploring his options to begin brewing his own beer, but reports that Ohio laws would have to be changed first to make it cost effective. With all that Daniels has managed to accomplish so far, we can only imagine bigger and better things to come down the road.
South Park Pizza Tavern is located at 1301 Wayne Ave., Dayton. Call (937) 586-9526 for more information.

TweetHappy 3rd Birthday L’80s Night
Looking for a great way to enjoy the 65+ degree weather once again heading our way Tuesday, March 24? May we suggest a trip to Club Vex, 101 S. St. Clair St., where the popular L’80’s Night will be celebrating it’s third anniversary.
L’80’s Night is a holdover from when the club was Pearl. The weekly event is free for everyone except guys under 21, $3, and features DJ’s Jay, Heather and Bruce spinning ’80s requests. Cheap drink specials and ’80s-styled girls on the dance floor usually ensure a good crowd, especially in the warmer months when the outdoor patio is packed.
This Thursday they will up the ante even more for the anniversary celebration. Expect a live performance from Electric Banana, a break dance demonstration from The Circle Nerdz and a dance contest. Drink specials will include $2 PBR and High Life bottles and $3 Long Islands.
What will your ’80s request be?

TweetReal life Sam Malone is laid off
Sometimes you may want to go where everybody knows you’re name, where they’re always glad you came, but at the Boston bar, which inspired the ’80s to early 90s television show starring an ensemble cast including Ted Danson, there’s one less bartender around to help make that happen.
Eddie Doyle, a bartender at “Cheers” for 35 years and inspiration for the Sam Malone character on the show, has lost his job after being laid off. The bar’s owner sited a tough economy and sagging business as the cause of Doyle’s layoff along with several other bar staff in an Associated Press article written by Jay Lindsay. Doyle, another casualty of a worldwide travel slump, says he doesn’t know what he’s going to do next.
Doyle began working at the bar in 1974 when it was called the Bull & Finch Pub.
His last day at Cheers will come with a going-away party later this month on Tuesday, March 24 at the Hampshire House, upstairs from the Bull & Finch. He also confirmed that he’ll be getting a weekly check until the end of the year, but alas, no tips.

The Associated Press story goes on to say:
Doyle, who will give his age only as around 66, described his job in the early years as “ringmaster.” People of all stripes, from college professors to working men, would meet to hash out the day’s events, give one another a hard time and occasionally cause mischief. He recalled a group of regulars who got in trouble racing wheelchairs at a hospital where he was staying with an illness, just before stopping in to surprise him with a party on the night “Cheers” made its debut in 1982.
The clientele changed when the TV show took off, and Doyle has had plenty of brushes with famous people. Kevin Costner stopped by once, and Doyle shook hands with Adm. William J. Crowe Jr., former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The TV show’s entire cast has been in and out of the bar, though probably not for inspiration.
Doyle was nothing like his TV counterpart, the womanizing barkeep Sam Malone. He’s married to the same woman he met at the bar when he was a regular there in the early 1970s …
The article ends saying: He’ll be leaving a place best known for the fiction it inspired but was actually a lot like it, despite the sometimes goofy plots, Doyle said. The interactions between characters remind him of what the real Cheers was: “a bunch of eccentrics that could get together and become friends,” Doyle said.

TweetGood times are on tap for St. Paddy’s Day
There’s plenty on tap across Dayton for St. Patrick’s Day. Several Dayton-area Irish pubs and specialty beer bars are waiting for the day itself, some will celebrate beforehand and others are starting early only to keep the party going through the day itself — Tuesday, March 17.
What began as a day of mourning for Ireland’s patron saint has turned into a celebration of all things green. If you can’t make it to the Emerald Isle and are staying in town, we have your next best bets. A few new twists to this year’s celebrations worth pointing out first, Dublin Pub and Flanagan’s are partnering on a wristband that can get you into both bars, which can save you money if you’re planning to make the day go as long as possible. See the information below on either bar for more information on this offer.
For those of you looking to party like it’s Patty’s day, but are skipping out due to it falling on a weekday, there will be a Leprechaun Pub Crawl happening on Saturday, March 14, at various locations in the Oregon Historic District to raise money for the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. Whatever route you chose to go, remember to drink responsibly and use a designated driver.

TweetCincinnati Snuggie Pub Crawl
Adding to the list of things I never thought I’d see: A Snuggie Pub Crawl based out of Cincinnati, Ohio of all places. Don’t believe me? There’s a Web page dedicated to the “Cincinnati Six” who claim to be “the Godfathers of the Snuggie Pub Crawl.”
If you visit to the Web site that hosts the Cincinnati Six page (which we would encourage you to do so you can see for yourself), it shows Barry, Mike, Kevin, Heath, Chris, and Doc raising their Snuggie Shots which match their Blue Snuggies at the bar. Our favorite part of the picture? They are all sporting their complimentary booklights. Our second favorite part? The groups slogan: “Get ready. Get Snuggie. Crawl!”
But this group isn’t the only one celebrating the Snuggie … you can see all the places that have had events or are planning upcoming events on this page. In fact, on March 21 there will be a Louisville, Kentucky Snuggie Pub Crawl.
For those not interested in drinking and Snuggies (we know you’re out there), here is a page dedicated to sniffing out new trends and news on the Snuggie front.
For those who have never had the great pleasure of seeing the commercial that started it all, here is the full Snuggie commercial in all it’s glory …

TweetLocal beer tasting to decide what’s on tap
The Lizards love the Oregon District’s Trolley Stop, and they’ve given us yet another reason to sing it’s praises … as if we needed another … a monthly beer tasting event held in conjunction with Belmont Party Supply during which attendees taste different beers and then vote to pick a beer the Trolley will have on tap for the next month.
Hosted by Mike Schwartz from Belmont Party Supply, the March beer tasting event will be held on Tuesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and are available for purchase at either Bellmont Party Supply or the Trolley Stop.

The March event will feature Stone Brewing Co.’s Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale; Left Hand Brewing’s Milk Stout (which TIME Magazine has described as “malty, roasty goodness”; Breckenridge Brewery’s Vanilla Porter; Unibroue’s Maudite; New Holland Brewing Company’s Mad Hatter IPA; Bell’s Brewery, Inc.’s Amber Ale; Lagunitas Brewing Company’s Maximus; Flying Dog’s Spring seasonal offering, Garde Dog and Allagash Brewing Company’s Allagash White.
Trolley Stop co-owner Robin Sassenberg reports that the $20 ticket assures you nine generous pours (4-5 ounces) of the nine featured beers and snacks galore. Do you know of any other bars in town doing cool things like this and finding innovative ways to involve their customers? Comment here and let us know if you do!
