Oscar-worthy animation? I’d say so.
And the race is on … The 12 films that will be in the competition for the feature-length animation Oscar were announced last week by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Many of the titles vying for the top spot are perfect for post-Thanksgiving Day feast - BURP! - family viewing. If you’d like to unbutton, Al Bundy style, on the couch this weekend, “Shrek the Third,” “Ratatouille” (my personal favorite of the group) and “Meet the Robinsons” are recently out on DVD, while “Surf’s Up’” cruised to video a while ago. Still garnering buzz in theaters are the boisterous bugs of “Bee Movie,” which await you should you be able to dress and move after the stuffed turkey’s done stuffing you. Others that received a nod from the Academy, but probably aren’t family-friendly fare, depending on the age of your kiddies, or aren’t out yet in theaters or DVD for you to view: “TMNT,” “The Simpsons Movie,” “Beowulf,” “Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters,” “Tekkonkinkreet,” “Persepolis” and “Alvin and the Chipmunks.” The three nominees chosen by a committee of Academy members will be announced on Jan. 22. The winner, chosen by members of the Academy eligible to vote, will be announced on the Feb. 24 broadcast of the 80th Academy Awards.

I just love that movie. I’d be surprised if it didn’t get a nod from the Academy and am hoping it will win. What film do you believe deserves the golden guy for best animation and please, I beg you not to say Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Any films you’ve seen lately that you’ve enjoyed? Anything you think deserves an Oscar nomination?
