The taste buds say, “stay away!”
Packaged in plastic bottles that have the shape of a flask and slide easily into a pocket (how very convenient), the latest product to come from the brain trust at Anheuser Busch, St. Louis, MO is called Mxologi. And no, that’s not a spelling error on the part of yours truly …
The concept? According to the Web site it’s “classic cocktails remixed into alcohol beverages that are always convenient and consistent, but never the least conventional.”
The cocktail choices are a Hurricane, Long Island Iced Tea and Pina Colada. The twist? Instead of making them with good stuff (i.e. liquor) they’ve chosen to go the Malt beverage route, which is a path I rarely, if ever, recommend, mostly due to taste, but also for the headache it can cause. Other first impressions were that the bottles could easily pass for mouthwash, suntan oil and lotion if you didn’t look closely … a coincidence I’m sure.
As much as I might want to skip it, Mxologi was introduced into the Dayton market at the end of August and I felt it was my duty to sample the three concoctions and report back. Here’s what I found:
The Hurricane: Bright, bright red, the flavor profile of this beverage is that of cherry cough syrup which I’ve never had an urge to drink. It’s sugary and generally awful. This would be one to skip - the worst of the three.
Long Island Iced Tea: Boasting an overwhelming lemon flavor to mask this beverages shortcomings - of which there are many - this is a total miss on the real long island iced tea recipe, which if mixed correctly doesn’t taste anything like this. Still, it’s better than the Hurricane, so at least it’s got that going for it.
Pina Colada: If you blend this with ice it kinda sorta works provided your really in the mood for a Pina Colada and it’s the only option and you use your imagination. Of the three this was the best.
Mxologi is one that’s worth skipping. The drinks are convenient and consistent which can be good, but not when they taste this bad. Consider yourself warned.
Have anything new you’ve tried that you’d recommend one way or the other? We’d love to hear about it if you’re willing to share.
