September 2009

Oktoberfest = Yummy.

Well, this is the weekend for the Dayton Art Institute’s fabulous Oktoberfest (in September, no less! How lucky are WE?), and you know what that means: Quality beers, delicious brats and metts, and myriad other assorted yummaliciousness.

What’s your favorite thing there?

And no, you can’t eat the art. You can’t even lick it.

Hot dogs: Best as a summer food?

Just getting back from Hal McCoy Night at Great American Ball Park, held tonight, Sept. 16, to honor McCoy for his 37 years covering the Cincinnati Reds for the Dayton Daily News.

One of the best parts about getting to the park? Hot dogs.

Can’t go to a game without having one, of course. (Or, in the case of tonight’s festivities, two.)

But, something didn’t quite feel right. It was a baseball game and everything, and the weather was sunny and warm. But it’s September, ya know?

The question: Are hots dogs better in the summer, or are they good no matter what time of year?

Maybe it just doesn’t seem right in the winter, when you couldn’t also conceivably be grilling them as well as buying them at a concession stand.

Whatever the answer, my stomach was happy to accept a a few tonight.

What’s your Fazoli’s breadsticks limit?

I stopped in yesterday for a quick bite before an assignment. I had eight.

There’s plenty of tasty stuff to order, and the breadsticks are far from the worst for you.

According to the Fazoli’s nutrition information chart, some items that contain more calories than a breadstick, per serving, include: The grilled chicken, lemon ice, grilled chicken artichoke salad and balsamic vinaigrette and Italian salad dressings.

But let’s face it. How much do we at the Leadbelly Blog Headquarters care about nutrition facts? Very little.

So when you’re not thinking about the calories and you’re stomach’s turning from hunger, how many of those bad boys can you put down?

Labor Day weekend goodies

Brother Ron here…

We live just the other side of the fence from Alter HS, so we get to hear the hum and drum and music and all from Alterfest all weekend long (sounds like they’re in our living room, to tell the truth) every year.

Alterfest is fun, but it’s also good eatin’. The lines are always long for those famous chicken dinners — half a grilled bird, grilled corn and sides for $8 — and properly so. This year I went for the cabbage rolls instead, which were delicious.

A lady at our table asked where in town you could get cabbage rolls, and I suggested the Amber Rose up in North Dayton. I know there are some other spots, but I haven’t been to them in a while…

So, can anybody recommend a few spots for great cabbage rolls? We’ll check ‘em out.

And happy Labor Day to you all!

The worst pizza in the world, he says.

Hmmmmm… Dial on over to this story from Men’s Health magazine, and see what you think.

He makes a couple of good points, especially about Italian pizza not resembling American stuff. It’s so different over there that you at first may not quite know it’s the same dish as what you’re used to…

I blame Chicago, personally…

Thoughts?
