Eat at Joe’s
I was doing business in Springfield not long ago and, to my surprise, was seized by a sudden urge for lunch. To my delight, I happened to be passing a restaurant I had never been in … and I could tell at a mere glance that it was the sort of joint a Leadbelly would love.
It may have been the cook working over a grill in the parking lot, which smoked away as he bent over burgers and chops. He smiled as I pulled into the lot — a very good sign.
It may have been the diner-like architecture, or the old-fashioned sign.
It may simply have been the name: “Joe’s.”
More precisely, it was Joe’s U.S. 40 Grille at 1205 N. High St, the “Home of Joe’s Full Service Catering!” according to the menu.
It’s also the home to some very sweet and hard-working wait staff, that friendly cook I mentioned before, and a burger quite unlike anything else I’ve had in a while: Da Big Cheeseburger, which was quite massive and very good. Handmade, right off the grill with fresh toppings, it was terrific. Hard to finish, it was so big.
The whole menu at Joe’s looked great. Several soups, subs, fountain service, a great-looking “county fair” pork chop, the US 40 meatloaf, and “dee lux” platters that enticed me to stop by again sometime soon.
The decor is fun, too — they have a library of offbeat books for sale, a ton of OSU, Reds and Bengals stuff on the walls, and lots of local history items. This place is very proud of Springfield. I bet Springfield returns the favor.
Check ‘em out at www.eatatjoes40.com, then stop by.
Tell ‘em a Leadbelly sent ya.

Rainy-day grub
OK, here’s a question: Do you feel like eating different things on a gray, drab, rainy day such as today?
I was thinking of grilling out for the family tonight, and then looked outside this morning and wondered.
Does the weather affect your appetite?
