Dayton’s best pizza? Hmmmm….

Look, I really hate to get this all stirred up again… And I know that I seem to go back and forth on this… Really…

BUT: I was out Friday night in the Oregon District with friends and it got to be about 10:30 PM, minus dinner, and an Oregon Express OE pizza sounded sooooooo good….

And by gosh, it was. I love the fact that they get it on a slab of cardboard, that you can’t find the crust even if you go looking for it (I did!), that the sauce is tangy and sharp, and that you can eat it up on the best balcony in town and watch the downtown skyline twinkle while the trains cruise by…

Best? Hell, why not?

Got a better one?

Oh, and by the way: If you take the leftovers home, the box they give you has the coolest, prettiest little full-color Italian street scene on it… It’s almost worth the pizza, it’s so nice to look at. I’m just sayin’.

Discuss, dammit!

Wow, back in the day going to high school downtown, there was nothing better in the world than a slice of sicilian and an orange soda at the downtown Flying Pizza, not quite what it used to be, but still darn good the last time I had some a couple of years ago….Was back earlier this summer and had a Cassano’s in Springfield and it was just as good as I always remembered it being, first time I had had one in years and it was great, even had the old “Pizza King” logo mascot on the wall…..Ahh memories…..

I have to say by far that Cassano’s is the best. And if you don’t believe me, head over to Tipp City and come on in, I’ll make you the best pizza you’ve ever had. Ask for me and tell me you saw this, and i’ll hook you up.

If you like unusual ingredients on specialty pizzas, you have to try Monster Pizza from Doubleday’s in Centerville. We love “attack of the killer tomatoes” and “it came from outer Greece.” YUM!!!

Try Don’s Pizza Palace on Center Street in Germantown. It’s may look like a hole in the wall but it’s excellent pizza. They’re always busy and no, it’s not the only pizza place in town. Very, very friendly service. Top of the list for me.

My favorite by far is Giovannis in Fairborn!! Yum!!!

You are right about Giovanni’s. In addition to the pizza being crispy crust, the ambiance in the place is so family! But give Yellow Springs’ Ha Ha Pizza a try. You can get whole wheat crust, pineapple, sour cream, and it has a good salad bar as well. Very laid back….

La Rosa’s pizza is excellent! I can’t believe all the positive comments about Marions pizza. I would rate them at the bottom of the list… very nasty tasting. The sausage and pepperoni they use is crap.

For me it is a toss up between Classic Pizza in Huber and Joe’s pizza on Airway. I have grown up on Classic Pizza and my in laws grew up on Joe’s. So we split our Pizza time between the 2.

Pizza has crust…Marions….Cassanno’s…Donato’s…Allmade on a cracker. If that is your idea of good Pizza…Maybe you should leave the Miami Valley for once in your life to see how it should be done… Does anyone know where one would go to get REAL Pizza…Either New York style… Or Chicago deep dish? Or other wise just good…made with a crust that is closer to something hand tossed and not made with a rolling pin?

Dayton Pizza Factory is way better than Marion’s cardboard pizza. Fresh ingredients, delicious pizza!

I am not a pizza fan, it takes some doing for me to even cross the street for pizza, but I have to tell you, Giovanni’s in Fairborn changed my mind. Once I had eaten it, I realized why I never liked pizza in the past, compared to Giovanni’s it’s all crap!

I grew up on Hoagie’s. Introduced my hubby & in-laws to it & they loved it. When 2 of the sisters opened a Hoagie’s in Huber, the other sued. None of the kids had control because their dad didn’t leave a will, but this one sister wouldn’t let it go. It’s OK for her kids to run the one up north, but no one else I guess. The Huber location changed the name to “Mama’s Pizzeria” to end the mounting legal fees. So if you like Hoagie’s, but don’t feel safe in the ghetto that used to be Northridge, give Mama’s Pizzeria on Brandt a go. Same food made the same way, just friendlier service!

Hope everyone gives Palmero’s a try at 2667 South Dixie. Not only fantastic pizza but all their Italian food is great!

The OE has the best pizza in town followed by Joe’s, and the Flying Pizza downtown.

I would have to say that Little York Pizza on Little York and Poe in Butler Township/Vandalia is the best.

By Betty Dent

Christy’s Pizza in Vandalia is the best! I’t’s a home town story and has been in business since the 60s. Homemade crust, sauce — the very best!!

I have to agree with Ron - OE pizza is awesome! Marion’s has always been at the top of my list, but OE has become a strong contender. And for the record - I haven’t had OE pizza at 10:30 at night and in the condition that others are implying Ron was in. Weekday, lunch time - it rocks! And get it Mon-Wed and you get a 25% discount.

If you like cardboard then Marions or Cassanos is good. But the best by far is Hoagie’s Pizza.

Ron, Stop by the South Park Tavern in the same condition and at the same time of night, and you’ll be writing the same thing about the Pizza factory pizza they make and serve there. Also, saw you article about Jungle Jim’s in the famous RR there and thought your writing was great.

I have never had OE pizza, but Giovanni’s in Fairborn has some pretty darn good pizza, too. And if you are ever in Gallipolis OH, try Lorobi’s pizza. We make a trip down every fall to “look at the leaves” just so I can have one of their pizzas.

It’s Marion’s, or Cassano’s. Who care about an Italian street scene? BTW I ate at an Italian pizzeria in Bavaria a few years ago and it was basically a Cassano’s pizza. Cassano’s is pizza. All that other stuff is just an American imposter!!!! Yea Vic, you can use this for an ad.

Flying Pizza is absolutely fabulous. The only kicker is the location and the hours, but the pizza is superb!!!

Okay, I haven’t had that pizza, but I can tell you my favorite. It is Carmela’s in Brookville. Everything is homemade and hand sliced, dough and sauce made fresh daily. The sauce has a little zip, and the marinated tomatoes and mushrooms make the pizza even better. They also have killer salads, so it is worth the drive to Brookville to check them out!!!

OE is definitely good eats, and perhaps the hottest pizza you’ll ever burn your mouth on. But I’d definitely throw Pizza Factory and Joe’s Pizza in the mix.

I agree that the pizza @ OE is awesome, especially the Rueben. However, I’m from North Dayton and will argue forever that Hoagie’s Pizza (on North Dixie) is the best pizza I’ve ever had.

Whats to discuss, your biased. Marion’s Piazza is, has, and always will be Dayton’s Best, hands down, no question!!!!!!
