Mmmm, festival food: What’s yer fave?

There sure was lots of good stuff served up last weekend at the festivals and events I wandered through…. Grilled corn and smashing-good cajun food at Holiday at Home, great savory pork-chop sandwiches grilled at the Reggae Festival, and those yummy chicken dinners the folks at the Alter Fest have turned into a local favorite.

That’s one I hit each year: Half a grilled chicken, two sides and a roll for $8, and the chicken is always perfectly cooked. Add a beer and watch the festivalgoers stroll by, and you’re fixed for a while. Just watch out for those blackjack tables…

Fall is festival time here in the Miami Valley… and festivals mean yummy eats, natch. Greek Festival is next weekend, and that baklava (do I have that spelled right?? i’m too hungry to check) is beckoning, all honey-sweet. The Italian Festival, Oktoberfest, ye olde turkeye legges at the RenFest…. they’ve all got their own special culinary delights.

What’s your favorite in all that?

Greek Festival hands down. It’s this coming weekend. Me favorites are the tiropeta and spanakopeta (cheese and spinach-and-cheese pies), dolmades (lamb and rice wrapped in grape leaves and simmered in a tomato-based sauce), and the lamb shank dinner. YUM. I buy lots and freeze them. Best bet is to go early, for lunch, on Friday - if you can’t go then, be there at 11:00 on Saturday to beat the crowd.

Wine & Dine: More local restaurants are offering wine tasting/dinner pairings [review]

Wine glasses

Some are searching for new customers. Others are looking for a test market for new appetizers or entrees. Others want customer feedback on which new wines to add to the wine list. Whatever their reasons, more restaurants in the Dayton area are using wine tastings and wine dinners to try to get new, fresh faces to cross their doorsteps. A decade ago, diners could easily count on one hand the number of restaurants that held regular wine events. Now, the number exceeds a dozen and is growing. More »
