WHAT?!?! THEY CLOSED MY WHITE CASTLE!!!!

Oh, now COME ON. There is bad news, and there BAD DAMN NEWS.

This fall under the latter category, and then some: They’ve CLOSED MY WHITE CASTLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Several notes to the corporate and city brainiacs who allowed this atrocity to occur:

— That was my White Castle. Who said you could close it?

— I don’t care that it’s going to be a Sonic. Who cares about Sonic? It’s a routine burger joint; White Castle is a unique cultural institution — a defining fast-food icon. You can’t close them. It’s not allowed.

— Why do the White Castlers think I’m going to drive to Dayton or Huber Heights or wherever they’ve “directed” me to go? I LIVE IN KETTERING. THE WHITE CASTLE IS ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK.

— I’m too upset to talk about this any more.

There IS a White Castle (attached to a gas station, but still…) on SR 123 in Franklin at I-75. Hit the highway, exit to the west less than 1/10 mile, and home again… not a bad road trip for some sliders!

I think White Castle is disgusting and smells like butt. Sonic is AWESOME and I can’t wait for it to be finished.

My wife and I actually made the drive of shame last night… all the way up to Huber Heights to get a sack of 20. Do you have any idea how far that is?

Well, I’m sorry that you are losing your favorite place, but If they aren’t making money,then.. out they go.. Personal opinions aside, “a unique cultural icon?”. I don’t think I can take your commentary seriously after that…

Since it’s pointless to suggest you move to Dayton, why don’t you move to Huber Heights? Think of it this way: they must be your kind of people.

I think this is what that Fortune story on “Dying Dayton” was forecasting. Without a White Castle, why bother anymore?

Was hungry the other night. Didn’t know what I wanted. Yes! White Castle. Saw the darkened store from far down the street. An “Available” sign for a tombstone. Was really, really bummed. REALLY bummed. Still can’t believe it. Six whities no pickle, small onion chip, small drink. WAAAAAHHHH! I need them. Sorry, the frozen store kind just don’t get it with me. A White Castle traded for a Sonic? Sorry. That can’t work for me. HEY, WHITE CASTLE CORPORATE SUITS…WE NEED A WHITE CASTLE IN KETTERING! Ron, had I known, we could’ve….

I feel your pain! I just drove by there today and it was the saddest thing I’ve seen in a long while. We need our White Castle, and I for one was doing my part to keep it in business! The end of an era indeed.

Brother Ron, I feel the same way. When my wife asked me at dinner why I seemed a little down I explained the closing of my favorite snack place. She then reminded me this happend to once before when they closed the one by the Dayton Mall in the late 80’s. Finally she suggested that I stop at Krogers and buy a box of frozen slyders! Sad I say just plain sad!

Wine & Dine: More local restaurants are offering wine tasting/dinner pairings [review]

Wine glasses

Some are searching for new customers. Others are looking for a test market for new appetizers or entrees. Others want customer feedback on which new wines to add to the wine list. Whatever their reasons, more restaurants in the Dayton area are using wine tastings and wine dinners to try to get new, fresh faces to cross their doorsteps. A decade ago, diners could easily count on one hand the number of restaurants that held regular wine events. Now, the number exceeds a dozen and is growing. More »
