Easter Bunny trauma?

Warning: This one’s not for the kids who still believe.

Is it just me or are the mall Easter Bunnies looking worse and worse these days? Sometimes I see one that’s reasonably adorable (though still looking nothing like a bunny) but most of the time they are frightening. And, well, ugly.

A friend of mine recently told me she wasn’t going to take her young child to see the Easter Bunny because she didn’t want to scar her for life. I don’t blame her.

Some of these bunnies look like they are about to eat the small children on their laps and I saw a photo of one the other day that looked almost as though it was wearing a bath robe instead of a suit. What is going on here?

Do you worry about traumatizing your kids by bringing them to see the Easter Bunny? Have you had a bad Bunny experience? Or do you love the Easter Bunny anyway? Share your stories below.

I saw one at the mall yesterday, and it looked like the costume hadn’t been washed in about 5 seasons. I wouldn’t spend money getting my daughter’s picture done with the Easter Bunny looking like that. Spend more money on the costume that the elaborate scene created around him.

I apologize about the bath robe. The cleaners were running late. It was only a half hour or so.

Using LIVE ANIMALS for photo ops with children is abusive to the animals. Bunnies are nervous creatures to begin with and are no doubt terrified by being held by so many children, especially since they can squeeze or otherwise hurt the rabbit without realizing what they are doing. Also DO NOT buy rabbits for Easter as pets unless you are ready to make a commitment to keep the animal for it’s full life and are ready to learn how to properly care for it. So many bunnies are abused over Easter. MAKE MINE CHOCOLATE!!!!

I don’t remember how old I was when I discovered I could see the person through the eye of he Easter Bunny costume. That was freaky! I think kids pick up on their parent’s nervousness more than being scared of the costume. If we are apaaled by it’s appearance even if we know it’s supposed to be fun, the kids sense this. And to make them do this just for the sake of a picture is crueler than kissing Great Aunt Hazel with the moles! Let them have fun according to them, not what you think is fun.

At least bunnies can make good pets for those who choose to have them. No pet dander problems unlike cats or dogs. It’s better than getting a live chick. But getting a pet just because it’s cute and not worrying about the rest is wrong.

My boyfriend was just commenting on this the other day—how Easter bunnies in malls are more creepy than cute. I agree to some extent. I think that they could make the costumes more approachable somehow, but you can’t deny the fact that kids are not as judgmental as adults and are not going to give much thought to whether the Easter bunny is ‘creepy’. It’s Easter, they get candy, they get to hunt for eggs, they get a few days off school—they’re happy.

I agree, too creepy!! We only take pictures with Santa in this household. Since when do you sit on the Easter Bunny’s lap and ask for candy?? Isn’t this a given?
