Spooky Town complete

I spent most of the day Sunday setting up my Spooky Town village. I decided on our bay window window sill for it’s space, natural light and proximity to an outlet.

The first step was to get each piece out one at a time and put the protective styrofoam back in the correct box.

Then I laid out each piece approximately where I wanted it placed. Getting the spacing right and knowing where you want things to be helps get all of the cords and switches in accessible spots.

I used my rolls of Lemax green grass material (I found mine with the Christmas collection - Not the Spooky Town) to cover the space and I carefully hid my cords underneath the mat. It took some trimming and the space I used took two full rolls plus the use of some of the trimmed pieces.

I used boxes from pieces to add height and “hills” to my village.

Once all the pieces were in place, I added the tiny accessories (a mailbox, street clock, pumpkins, etc.) and placed the trees throughout.

For the road and sidewalks, I used three packages of cobblestone and brick mats (the small ones - regularly $3.99 for each package at Michaels). I carefully cut the sidewalk pieces in half (so the road wouldn’t be the same width as the sidewalks) and used them on both sides of the street. Warning: It’s best to get these pieces out early and get them flattened under something heavy. They tend to want to roll back up which can easily destroy your town. It’s sort of like an earthquake in the miniature village…

Finally, I sprinkled tiny fake leaves, (some that I made myself and some found at the Garden Ridge store that are made by Lemax, along the grounds of my town.

With a power strip and the flick of a switch, my version of Spooky Town came to life.

Check out photos of my village from start to finish!

With the economy spiraling seemingly out of control, many people would do anything for a little treasure. On Saturday, Jan. 10, the Centerville-Washington Park District is attempting to give parkgoers just that. Grant Park, 501 Normandy Ridge Road in Centerville, is hosting an event called Cabin Fever Cache, offering a reason to get into the great outdoors despite cold temperatures. The event revolves around geocaching, a growing trend that is part time capsule, part treasure hunt. Think it sounds like something only a few nerdy, tree-hugging types might be into? Think again.
