Letter to mayor, police chief from Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 38

Click below to view a copy of the letter that was sent Wednesday, Sept. 3, informing Mayor Don Ryan and Chief Neil Ferdelman that members of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 38, which represents police officers in Hamilton and other agencies, will refuse off-duty security requests for the opening of the mayor’s restaurant, Ryan’s Tavern. With layoffs still on the table, the police union’s decision to do this is an act of frustration with city leaders, said Dick Holzberger, a former sheriff and Hamilton police officer who now owns The Christmas Store which is next door to Ryan’s Tavern. Kenny Craig, president of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, said he is meeting with chamber board members today, Sept. 9, to decide what their stance will be in regards to the police union’s action.

Let me begin by saying I am not a resident of Hamilton nor do I know the Mayor, Mr. Ryan.As an outside observer to the current stance of the Hamilton Police Department regarding Ryan’s Tavern, I offer these comments. The mayor of a city, the CEO of a company, and the head of a household are obligated to ensure the financial solvency of that particular unit. That person has the duty to scrutinize each and every expense incurred by that organization on its behalf. In good times, it is sound practice. In tough times, it is a critical exercise. These current budget reviews recommended by Mayor Ryan are not personal attacks on any person, group, or activity. Given the current financial difficulties facing the City of Hamilton, it is paramount that the funds available are spent in the most effective manner for the good of all concerned. This includes its public servants as well as its citizenship. Any recommendations for changes to the budget are open for public discussion and voted on by elected officials. It is a joint decision. As for Mr. Ryan, citizen, I seriously doubt Mr. Ryan wishes Hamilton to be unsafe. He and his wife reside in Hamilton. He located his business in Hamilton. While others are leaving the city, Mr, Ryan has invested greatly in a restaurant in downtown Hamilton that, if supported by Hamiltonians and others, should help revitalize the city and increase its revenue. In addition, rather than hire an outside service for security, Mr Ryan offered to personally pay officiers of the Hamilton Police Department for providing security for his new restaurant. This demostrates his confidence in their ability and his faith in the department. I would think the City of Hamilton would welcome this new business and the revenue it will provide. I am amazed to see that this is not the case. Perhaps Mr. Ryan would be well served to move his family and his businesses to West Chester or Mason where they would be welcome and safe.

With the economy spiraling seemingly out of control, many people would do anything for a little treasure. On Saturday, Jan. 10, the Centerville-Washington Park District is attempting to give parkgoers just that. Grant Park, 501 Normandy Ridge Road in Centerville, is hosting an event called Cabin Fever Cache, offering a reason to get into the great outdoors despite cold temperatures. The event revolves around geocaching, a growing trend that is part time capsule, part treasure hunt. Think it sounds like something only a few nerdy, tree-hugging types might be into? Think again.
