Shed Ender just $5 at area store

I was checking out the pet supplies at my local Big Lots this week and found they have the Shed Ender grooming tool for just $5.00! I had purchased one recently at Rite Aid for $14.99, so I am bummed, but I wanted to pass that along. Not all stock is available at all Big Lots, but might be worth a trip to your neighborhood Big Lots to see if you can get one for $5.00.

Guiness Book of World Record’s tallest dog

If you haven’t seen this on the news lately, Gibson, a Great Dane, has gone down in the record books as World’s Tallest Dog alive.

Gibson stands at 42.2” tall, but when he stands on his hind legs, he is around 7 feet tall!

He has his own Web site and you can see a video here.

That is one big lap dog!

Oprah show investigates puppy mills

On Friday April 4, special correspondent Lisa Ling will appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show with an investigative report on puppy mills. Winfrey says the show is “for anybody anywhere who loves a dog, has ever loved a dog, or just cares about their basic right to humane treatment.”

Oprah is dedicating the show to her late Cocker Spaniel Sophie, who died last month due to kidney failure. Oprah’s 2-year-old Golden Retriever Gracie died last July when she choked on a ball she was playing with, so it has been a rough several months for Oprah and her pets.

Although Oprah hasn’t bought any of her dogs from a puppy mill, but after seeing the show has decided to get any future dogs from animal shelters.

Pet-friendliest destination of 2008

If you like traveling with your dog, you may want to head to the Big Apple. According to the magazine Animal Fair, New York city is the most pet-friendly in the country due in part to the many restaurants and hotels in the area that allow pets.

Delta Airlines, Volvo, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess resort in Scottsdale, Arizona and The Driskill Hotel in Austin, Texas also received awards from Animal Fair for being pet-friendly.

Do you travel with your dog(s)? Where do you like to go?

Have cabin fever? Come to a treasure hunt for adults on Jan. 10 [things to do]

GPS device

With the economy spiraling seemingly out of control, many people would do anything for a little treasure. On Saturday, Jan. 10, the Centerville-Washington Park District is attempting to give parkgoers just that. Grant Park, 501 Normandy Ridge Road in Centerville, is hosting an event called Cabin Fever Cache, offering a reason to get into the great outdoors despite cold temperatures. The event revolves around geocaching, a growing trend that is part time capsule, part treasure hunt. Think it sounds like something only a few nerdy, tree-hugging types might be into? Think again.
