This year, during lent , we decided to hit different seafood places, yesterday (03-09-12) we just ate at McCormick and Schmick’s at the Greene. The prices were expense for the amount of food you receive. You have to ask for water and bread. It’s not given automatically. After asking for bread, it was cold and the whipped butter was almost frozen. There was no way to spread it on the cold bread, it all fell apart. We left being hungry! We would not recommend this establishment!!!

Methinks, most of these comments are pathetic. If I were either of the top two restaurants and read all the hurtful, negative comments, I would disqualify myself. While the poll is a true popularity contest, Methinks the results are proving that two awesome establishments exsist in this city, and in the end we should do our best to support our independent establishments.

I am the owner of Jay’s seafood. Jay’s daughter. I just want all of you to know there was no cheating going on. There are two great Seafood restaurant in the Miami Valley. I think we should all feel lucky to have some amazing independent restaurants to enjoy. I will continue to keep my father legacy going as his life was dedicated to serving fresh fish and great wine to the public along with supporting the community around us. Thank you for all your support of the last 33 years. Cheers.

I’m from the West coast originally and live on the East cost for over 20 years. I’ve been in the Dayton area for about 3 years now. My wife and I are lovers of FRESH shellfish and seafood and know the freshness. We really likes Mitchell’s down ion Westchester but a bit pricey. We have been to Jays and Sweenys and have to lean towards Sweenys due to the consist wonderful quality of selection and meals. Jays tend to be a bit more pricey but even if price is not a concern, we would go to Sweenys.

My family has gone to Sweeny’s for years to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. Sweeney’s has great atmosphere and very comfortable seating. They are always happy to accomodate our large family group. Staff and food are consistently outstanding. I like Jays too, but find it less cozy and inviting.

Looks like folks like Sweeny’s hands down as I too voted for them. With more positive comments than Jay’s, can’t understand how the poll has them winning (Jay’s). Methinks people are voting more than once for Jay’s. Shame Shame Shame… Jay’s is overpriced and compared to Sweeny’s, the food quality is medicore at best. I believe their reputation to be somewhat inflated We should have a “throw down” with voting that way. All you misguided Jay’s fans would finally understand. Bon Appetit!

Having been to both Sweeney’s and Jay’s, I am voting for Sweeney’s. My experience at Jays was expensive and very disappointing on several levels. Sweeney’s has a friendlier more relaxed enviroment, with excellent food & service at reasonable prices. Their beer and wine selection is one of the best in the area. I have not had any bad experiences at Sweeney’s and definitely suggest giving them a try.

Hey folks, please be sensitive when posting comments. Remember all the independent restaurant owners are friends (and will continue to be when the voting is over)and working for the same goal, good food and good dining experience for the Dayton area.

Sweeney’s is one of our favorite places. Doug the bartender is great, the food is wonderful at very reasonable prices and the saltwater aquariums are beautiful and give it a wonderful relaxed atmopsphere, if you haven’t tried Sweeney’s you are truly missing out on a wonderful place!

Sweeneys. Price, selection, quality, taste, it’s the place to go. Besides, it is the Cheers of Centerville. Everybody knows your name once you start going there. Many thanks to Ron, Christy, Doug the bartender, Rena kit.manager, all the servers, and Chefs for making Sweeneys a great place to come home to. They all know their jobs and do them well.

Sweeney’s? WHAAAT?

Jay’s Seafood is HANDS DOWN the best Dayton has to offer. Who can beat FRESH fish….flown in 4 times a week & cooked to perfection. Jay Haverstick was a class-act who knew the restaurant business and successfully built his to be an institution in the city of Dayton. His daughter Amy continues to honor his legacy by providing consistantly superior food and outstanding service. Get outta Centerville, people…take a cab if you have to…you’ll be glad you did!

I could argue that Jay’s is the best restaurant in Dayton, but best seafood is automatic. They continue to deliver on a great tradition of wonderful food and great service. I just got back from the coast and find most of those seafood places not holding a candle to Jay’s quality and taste.

All I have to say is WOW!!! Those of you who think Sweeney’s is the best seafood in Dayton need to get out more. The times that I’ve eaten at Sweeney’s have been disappointing to say the least. I even got sick after eating there because the my meal was undercooked and covered in a horrible, plastic-like sauce that should have been an embarrassment to any self-respecting chef. JAY’S IS THE BEST!!!. Bonefish is good, but it’s just another chain like Red Lobster. SUPPORT JAY’S!!!

By Harriet L. Uphoff

Jay’s is the best if you want authentic, fresh seafood on a consistent basis. The blackened salmon is my favorite but the mussels, the scallops, the tuna are also excellent. The drinks are a generous pour and Jay, not his daughter know what they are doing. I especially like the fact that I can have a 5 oz.
piece of fish as an entree rather than a larger portion. There are many reasons to go to Jay’s; I have been to the others on the list and they do not compare.

I’ve been going to Sweeney’s for years and would recommend this restaurant to all seafood lovers and beef lovers as well. Great people work there and the atmosphere is great. Make sure you stop at the bar on the way in and on the way out to be entertained by “Doug the Bartender. An experience I’m sure you won’t forget.

Sweeney’s - local, family owned, a fusion of Florida/Gulf Coast and New England Style seafood. Simply prepared seafood in a low-key environment. Doug behind the bar has been a fixture for over 15 years and, for the size of the establishment, they do a great job of introducing me to great value wines and beers each time I am in.

Good to see the locals still holding their own!

Sweeney’s is definitely the BEST. We visit family in Dayton two or three times a year and ALWAYS want to go to Sweeney’s - - it is definitely worth it. I have recommended it to people from Northwest PA who are going to be in that area and know of two groups that have gone there.

Sweeney’s is great. Excellent food, wait staff is very friendly and Doug behind the bar is very knowledgeable. One of the best wine and beer selections in the area with regular new variety’s to choose from. Great atmosphere, beautiful salt water aquariums - almost like being at the beach. If you have not tried Sweeney’s yet, give ‘em a shot, you won’t be disappointed.

It takes a special restaurant to prepare the seafood dishes just right. When you couple that with a good glass of wine, there is hardly any more one can ask in a meal. Sweeny’s restaurant fulfills this and more for us. We have told our friends and now they are also the frequent customers at this restaurant.

My husband & I have enjoyed going to Sweeney’s for years! We REALLY like, no, love mussels! If you are going to pull a mussel, Sweeney’s is the place to do it. And if you have any room left the desserts aren’t bad either! For, a Seafood house that is a 1000miles from the ocean the quality of fish is pretty darn good! My husband and I thoroughly enjoy the casual dining experience with an excellent selection of wines and beers. We enjoy Sweeney’s so much we now have regular family gatherings there

Jay’s is an Institution in Dayton. Jay’s is about great food. The food is wonderful, and the service is great. Not pretentious or overbearing, but attentive. The majority of the wait-staff have been there for years, which says a lot about the management and the quality of the restaurant.

I’ve tried all the restuarants in this Poll, and Sweeny’s is my favorite, by far. The owners, Ron and Christie, have created an atmosphere that is warm and inviting. The seafood is exceptionally well prepared and delicious. The menu is always fresh. Doug, their mixologist, really knows his stuff. Personally, I like the wonderful beer selection. It seems like Sweeney’s always has a new and unique beer to try. If you haven’t tried Sweeney’s, you really owe it to yourself to give it a try.

Not only is their seafood very good, but they have some outstanding soups. Their New England Clam Chowder is standard and excellent. They also have two speciality seasonal soups. In the winter their Lobster Bisque is a treat, and in the summer their Gazpacho soup is wonderful.

Sweeney’s is the place I want to go to celebrate a special occasion - or to feel better after a very rough day. I can count on superb service and excellent food. The salmon is delicious as is the clam linguini. The gazpacho soup is the best we have found any where. Salads and vegies are always wonderful. And the dessert menu - if we have room to eat any more - is great. Sweeney’s is the place to go for a fine meal.

I have enjoye dining at Sweeney’s for many years. Sweeney’s menu offers many and varied selections as does their beer and wine lists. I have always found their seafood fresh and expertly prepared. The service has proved equally satisfying and friendly. I prefer Sweeney’s casual environment over the more stuffy style of the chain restaurants. All factors considered I heartedly recommend Sweeney’s for an excellent dining and enjoyable experience.
