Michael Jackson’s “Last concert” movie - will you see it?
Word broke this week that Sony will likely release a theatrical film culled from more than 80 hours of footage of what turned out to be Michael Jackson’s final rehearsals. The director may be Kenny Ortega, best known most recently for helming the three High School Musicals.
I greet this news with, if you will, an understanding shudder. On the one hand, the idea strikes me as incredibly crass and ghoulish - especially since some of the rehearsal footage was shot the night before Jackson died.
And yet, we all know that crass commercialism and Michael Jackson go hand-in-hand - even beyond the grave. Some might say especially beyond the grave. And the concert promoter AEG has to find some way to make back all the money they lost in the original concert investment.
Still, I can’t call myself terribly interested in this concert film - the whole endeavor leaves a bad taste in my mouth. There is a tribute concert being organized for Aug. 29 - what would have been Jackson’s 51st birthday - using the same set list Jackson was to have performed. That will appear on TV - and I find that much more palatable.
LATE UPDATE: The movie is still moving forward, but plans for the TV tribute special have fallen apart, according to the LA Times. Figures.
But will you see the Jackson concert film?

In a year or so,I’d watch it.I’ve been listening to his #1 hits CD,forgot what lovely ballads he sang.Whatever you think of him personally,we’velost a great, great talent. He was a man-child.If indeed he suffered from Discoid Lupis,it is a terrible disease. My niece has it and you will do anything to hide it. Remember, there but for the grace of God go you.I don’t believe he was a pedophile.Fans/media kept him reclusive and isolated him from becoming an adult.A gentle person with a good heart and tremendous talent.I’m grateful he shared it with us.What a choir God has now, can’t wait to hear it myself.By rrhoop5469

If they release it as a concert DVD then yes, I will buy it. I would love to see his rehearsals. If they make it into something stupid, then no. Wasn’t a big fan but the man was the best at what he did. No one can even come close to his abilities. INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY!By Michelle

I would most definitely watch it. Not only will it make me feel better to see him alive and well, but watching him perform for the last time will be a memory that will stick with me considering the circumstances. i never had the opportunity to attend a concert myself, so this will be the closest thing for me. I can’t wait. All you haters, quit hatin’. RIP MJ!!!!By Give It A Rest

yes I will see it. Micheal was great and like elvis had no life of his own. seems strange. elvis died at 42 and micheal at 50. they will live to be legands forever. I just wish people would quit putting him down so much and let the man rest in peace. if you don’t like him fine. only god knows what he did or didn’t do and only he can judge. it’s not for us to judge. He was a child that never grew up and loved all children. he did not wrong and he cared so much for the children in the world and for peace in the world. he was a wanderful singer and will always be. and he could dance. he didn’t dirty dance or do anything that bad. i have seen much wrose dancing and holding of areas than he has done. get a life leave him alone. there is lots more in this world that do wraong. you don’t hear about them cause they are famous and have no money. he had money and they took full advantage of it. Rest in peace MJ. i am sure you have found love in gods home now.By Fed Up

I don’t know whether I’ll see it when it originally comes out, or whether I’ll wait till the DVD is available, or wait until it’s on NBC’s movie night, but I suspect I’ll see it sooner or later. I’m not a big MJ fan, but MJ was a big enough part of my life as a DJ that I’d be curious to see how well he performs at 50 (I’m 53,) and what kind of lighting and staging is used.By ME

I think another word that comes to mind is greedy. But I agree don’t think I care to watch. I don’t think I could watch a tribute either.
