What movie scenes made you scream out loud?

Since pumpkins and haunted houses have sprung up like presidential election polls, I figure it’s high time for the season’s first scary movie poll.

Although I’ve always considered myself to be not exactly the bravest of souls (you’ll never catch me riding a huge roller coaster at Kings Island, for example), I don’t scare easily at movies. While a number of them have filled me with dread and given me nightmares, very few films have sparked a truly visceral reaction like an out-and-out “AIIIEEEE!”

Here is one movie moment , however, that did get an AIIEEE: The “chum” scene from Jaws, contained in this compilation:

That scene scared me so badly, I not only screamed, but scrambled to the back of the bed I had been sitting on. And I saw that on TV. Heaven help me if it had been in a theater.

So what movie scenes have sparked a similar reaction from you? They don’t necessarily have to be horror movies. If the fire in Bambi made you wail, that counts.

Hey Eric — JAWS is an excellent choice. In fact, we’re playing it at the Little Art horror marathon this weekend. Will you be able to make it out? As for me, plenty of movies have made me jump and scream, but a movie that can make me sit rigid in suspense earns my utmost respect. An underrated contender in this category would have to be the “Climbing Over the Passed Out Killer in the Police Car” scene from SCREAM 2. If you haven’t seen it, I’ll point you toward Mike D’Angelo’s excellent recounting of exactly what this theatrical experience was like: http://www.panix.com/~dangelo/col25.html#scre.html

With the economy spiraling seemingly out of control, many people would do anything for a little treasure. On Saturday, Jan. 10, the Centerville-Washington Park District is attempting to give parkgoers just that. Grant Park, 501 Normandy Ridge Road in Centerville, is hosting an event called Cabin Fever Cache, offering a reason to get into the great outdoors despite cold temperatures. The event revolves around geocaching, a growing trend that is part time capsule, part treasure hunt. Think it sounds like something only a few nerdy, tree-hugging types might be into? Think again.
