Bernie Mac,1957-2008

I cannot claim to have been a particular follower of Bernie Mac’s, especially since he gained more fame in TV than in movies, but I can say that he was always someone I was glad to see on the big screen, whether it was in Bad Santa, the Oceans franchise, or especially, his routine in The Original Kings of Comedy. And it makes me sad that I won’t get to see him in something new. I was especially disheartened to read that complications from pneumonia took him. We lost Jim Henson in a similar way. George Clooney put it best: “The world just got a little less funny.”

Amen.

I’ll remember The Original Kings of Comedy most. The first three comedians were good, but standard, stand-up. Then Bernie Mac took the stage, and launched into a routine about gaining custody of his sister’s kids that was painful, truthful, and funny all at the same time. I’ve only seen one other comedian do that: Richard Pryor. It was an amazing thing to see, and sadly, he’s gone only 8 years later.

Go back to the totally awesome '80s this weekend [things to do]

80s fashionista

"Back to the '80s," an area premiere, opens Friday, Nov. 6, for three weekends in Kettering. The retro show is an account of 1989 high school senior class, as recalled by a man in his 30s. Unrequited love, popularity (and its opposite), a debate about CDs replacing cassette tapes, student elections, a stolen speech, new kids in school and an English teacher in a magazine centerfold are among the plot lines. There are 20 songs, including "Footloose," "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "You Give Love a Bad Name." Like, totally awesome! » More
