Today’s DVDs: Drillbit Taylor, Vantage Point

Today’s DVDs bring us two flawed but decent spring entertainments.

Drillbit Taylor: Widely regarded as the clunker in the Judd Apatow factory, the movie does take too long to get going, because at firt it doesn’t realize the kids who need protection from a bully are the real stars, not the less funny adults. When the kids move front and center and start cracking the jokes, the movie works, if only just so. Full review: GRADE: B-

Vantage Point: This gimmicky thriller that covers an assassination plot from several points of view gets a touch too frenetic, and the more frenetic it gets, the more ridiculous it gets. Even so, there’s enough energy in the movie to make it a solid programmer that doesn’t aim too high, but still scores. Strong editing from Stuart Baird (the first two Lethal Weapon movies; Casino Royale) helps a lot. GRADE: B

I noticed this week’s slate isn’t as bad as the last few weeks have been. Have you picked up “City of Men” - the sequel to “City of God”? That was my must see this week. I’m also interested in “My Blueberry Nights” and “Persepolis”. I watched “Meet the Browns” last night and though it was still entertaining, it wasn’t anywhere near as good as “Why Did I Get Married”. Not to mention my television seasons that were released. Any thoughts on any of the smaller releases?

'Hamlet 2' [movies]

Plenty of laughs are in store in the comedy smash of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Steve Coogan plays high-school drama coach Dana Marschz. While trying to stage a lighthearted sequel to Shakespeare's famous tragedy he faces laughable hardships including a bender that leaves him lurching into a liquor store on roller skates in search of the cheapest booze. His flock of students includes one mute girl who's the object of as many random assaults as Kenny from "South Park." And the stage production at the movie's climax includes a song called "Rock Me, Sexy Jesus." More »
