How often do you go out to the movies?

I periodically promote the benefits of going to the movie theater on this blog, but today I thought I’d take a different tact.

I know very well that people avoid movie theaters these days because of the bad economy, sky-high prices, annoying talkers and texters and such.

But I’m a different animal than most. I go to the movies not only because it’s part of my job, but because that’s just me. It’s what I do. It’s part of my identity being a movie guy. Even before I started reviewing, I would go a couple of times a week. However, I’d like to take the pulse of the people who read this blog.

So I’m going to strip this issue to the basics and let you do most of the talking, I hope.

First, a couple of questions: Just how often DO you go to the movie theater?

How often do you go to the movie theater?
  More than once a week
  Once or twice a month
  About 4-5 times a year
  Never

And what is the ONE reason above all others that you don’t go more often?

What is the MAIN reason you don’t go to the theater more often?
  Too expensive
  Rude audiences
  Bad movies
  Who’s got time?

And here are a few questions best addressed in the comments:

When you do go to the movies, what makes you decide to venture out?

How many movies a week do you watch at home?

And

What would get you to go to the movies more often?

So the recent problem I’ve been encountering when I go to the movies, is that the people I go with, can’t decide what movie they want to see! Last week, we all stood in front of the theater talking, and trying to figure out what movie we were going to see. It was either the Panda movie, or Indiana Jones…and nobody could decide which one they would rather see, or if it was worth paying that much money for it, considering we weren’t dyeing to see either of the movies. Then we were talking about how it was getting late, and it’s the last showing, so we didn’t want to go in there and fall asleep. So we ended up standing in front of the theater just talking and laughing, and before we new it, 2 hours went by and we could have seen the movie. Next time we’ll have to be more decisive and pick a movie right away!

I’m with Susan on this almost exactly. I have four kids, so it is tough to schedule movies. I do try to take them to the movies they will enjoy the most, as it is still a better experience on a movie screen than on a TV screen.

what would get me to go to the movies more often? If theaters required patrons to surrender their cellphones at the door or encourage them to leave their annoying electronics in their cars. People are so rude!

Escaping to the movies is simply my sanity. It’s an escape from home, a chance to enjoy one of my favorite art forms, and be around adults. Even when people are jerks in the theater, it’s not usually enough to ruin my entire day. Occasionally, though, I do take the kids. lol I go once or twice a week. Usually a friend and I will be anticipating a release date several weeks an advance and I’ll have that weekend planned out. I almost always go to matinee shows and I don’t go crazy on concessions, so it keeps the cost low. I don’t normally go more than twice a week — usually Saturday or Sunday, though I will occasionally do a double feature or a midnight premier. I don’t really have any desire to go more often than that. Cost is a factor, and I also just don’t have the time. I watch movies at home frequently, though, which is why I’m always adding to my DVD collection.

I was one of those people who went to the theatre several times a week. Even as a kid — and even on school nights!! My dad is a real movie buff. BUT now that I have a baby at home we get out maybe 4 times a year. Thank goodness for NetFlix!!! And the fact that films come out on DVD so quickly these days.

I go to the theaters pretty much as often as there’s a movie I want to see. In the lean months of February through March that might mean I don’t go at all but in Oscar season and the summer that might mean I go weekly or a couple times a week.

At home I usually watch two to three a week, sometimes more. There has to be some big reason for me to go to the theater. For example, if it’s something that MUST be seen in a theater, then I’ll see it. (“The Dark Knight”, “Transformers”, etc.) If it’s something that I feel strongly enough to give money to in the hopes of increasing box office, I’ll do that (indies fit in here). Tonight I’m seeing the Argento film - I saw the others on DVD, and I’d love to see this in a theater, which I will. For the second part of the question, if it was cheaper and people knew how to act in public, I’d go more - but that’s not going to happen any time soon.
