Have you ever met anyone famous?

I spent last weekend at the 24-hour science fiction marathon in Columbus and had the distinct pleasure of seeing Patricia Neal, who’s best known among sci-fi nuts for her role as the female lead of The Day the Earth Stood Still. She won a Best Actress Oscar for Hud, and her other credits include Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Fountainhead, among many others.

It was great fun to hear her answer questions about her career, with her voice still containing its distinctive rasp. Probably the best moment came when she was told that Keanu Reeves was starring in a Day the Earth Stood Still remake and she answered, “Who?” I think she was being serious, but the crowd loved it.

I will post more about the marathon when time permits, but for now, I wanted to ask you all: What close encounters have you had with famous movie people? You don’t have to have met them face to face necessarily, but the encounter should ideally be better than “I passed so-and-so on the street once.” For instance, I didn’t get to meet Neal personally; she was too ill to do any signings, but seeing her was something I will long remember.

Your turn!

I used to work at Jokers and I met all kinds of famous people. LeVelle Crawford was a very generous tipper. Bill Bellamey helped me stock the beer cooler. I got hit by Ron White, who really did always have a glass of whiskey in hand. Christopher Titus was very funny but bitter about his tv show cancellation. Those are the ones I remember. For anyone who is looking to meet funny, famous people apply to work at a comedy cafe. It was a blast!

Hmmm - I’ve met lots of famous folks, but don’t think any of them were movie people really. I did meet Jack Klugman and Tony Randall in a hotel lobby. It was funny - they seemed to be great friends offstage as well as on. And I also had a close encounter with Neil Armstrong - about whom a movie will be made - does that count? LOL! I’ve met mostly music stars - lots of those from my Alabama band groupie days - ha! And I unexpectedly ran into BB King repeatedly when we stayed in the same small hotel over a weekend - he is a character!

I met Jack Hannah at the Cinci Airport once, I said Hi and he gave me the look of death and continued on his way mumbling something about idiot people. I also met Tuvoc from star trek voyager (Tim Russ) he was much nicer and signed a poster for me.

I met Lisa Lampanelli when she came to Dayton and performed at the Victoria back in late April. When I was younger, I met Jeremy Bulloch (who played Boba Fett in the original Star Wars films) at the comic book store in downtown Fairborn.

I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting movie people darn it all! Most of the ones I really want to meet are all gone … I would have loved to meet Patricia Neal. How fun is that. I have met Richard Simmons and Hilary Clinton (years ago). A fun topic for a blog would be who famous are you related to …

Why do I get the feeling that there should be a nudge-nudge, wink-wink with that comment?

I went along with my best friend to see Susan Egan perform and then met her back stage.

An Excuse to Celebrate

Mad Hatter Day

Mad Hatter

Mad Hatter Day is a day to do and say things that are usually considered absurd, but actually are very logical; and to avoid things that are considered normal, but are actually quite ludicrous. Kinda confusing, so today it should make perfect sense. Celebrate this mad holiday by doing…pretty much whatever you want. Things to do »

Get in the Halloween spirit with a ghost hunt or a haunted house tour [things to do]

Haunted House Waynesville

Perhaps you've heard stories from Room No. 4 at the Hammel House in downtown Waynesville — the site of a gruesome 19th-century murder. Or maybe you've heard tales from the Friends (Quaker) Meeting House. A candlelight flickers in the window, perhaps signaling long-dead conductors on the Underground Railroad. With more than 30 haunted houses, Chris Woodyard of Beavercreek, author of the "Haunted Ohio" book series, says Waynesville is easily the "most haunted town in Ohio." Call and schedule a haunted tour, and maybe you'll spot some ghosts. More »

Whether you're looking for a new spot for a date, a night out with the girls or whatever, The Melting Pot offers delicious fondue fun for everyone at its first area location in Washington Twp. The Melting Pot's fondue dining concept is certainly distinctive. Here, the diners are the chefs. For chocolate enthusiasts — and my sense is, there are many of you — dessert here is a gooey slice of heaven. More »

Black History Month: Natural Hair

Natural hair styles were worn by blacks in the 1960s and 70s as a means to express political activism and cultural pride. But do natural hair styles worn by men and women today still have such meaning? Produced by: Meghan Crosby,Chris Griffith
