What’s opening Friday, March 28?
This weekend’s movies offers trips to Vegas, the homefront, the land of capes and tights and a run at a marathon. I’ve placed a bet on the most popular destination.
Run, Fat Boy, Run: David Schwimmer (yes, from Friends) directs (yes, directs) this comedy about a man (Simon Pegg) who runs a marathon amidst romantic entanglements with his ex (Thandie Newton). Written by Michael Ian Black. Not sure what to make of this one.
Stop Loss: A soldier (Ryan Phillippe) refuses to return to Iraq despite a government mandate to do so. Can this Iraq war-related movie succeed where others have failed? Prospects look dim. More on this later.
Superhero Movie: Another alleged joke-a-minute movie skewers (see title and add an s). I’d write this off out of hand, but the buzz says this movie isn’t so bad. Given how low the bar has been raised by movies of this ilk, however, that may not be saying much.
21: MIT students make it big in Vegas by counting cards, in a story related in the book “Bringing Down the House” - although another movie took that title. Jim Sturgess (the male lead of Across the Universe, who I’m betting is more of a draw than people think) Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey and Laurence Fishburne star. Review appears Friday.
