Home (Re) Viewing: Kites, fog and bank robbers
The DVD selection this week is a little slim, but there is one prime picking if you look past movies released last year.
The Kite Runner: This adaptation of a highly acclaimed novel never quite found the audience or acclaim that was expected, maybe because it takes time to really catch fire, but the story builds and becomes quite affecting by the end. GRADE: B+
The Mist: Director Frank Darabont had good luck adapting Stephen King adaptations. He directed The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, and then this met a tepid reception. The horror story is all over the map in its tone at first, but once it settles down, this underrated chiller is quite creepy. Added bonus: The two-disc DVD set includes a black and white version. Iiiiinnnnnnterrressstinnng. GRADE: B+
From the catalog
Bonnie and Clyde: Many say this 1967 fiim with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway was the film that marked the transition from the old Hollywood to the maverick Hollywood that reigned through the mid-70s, but never mind such historical distinctions. Get this because it’s a great movie presented in those multi-disc sets that Warner Bros. does so well. GRADE: A+
