What’s opening March 21 and other musings

It’s a relatively mild week for new movies Friday, as tends to be the case when it warms up outside. Your pickings:

Drillbit Taylor: Kids tormented by a bully hire Owen Wilson as a bodyguard, not knowing his experience is lacking. It’s another comedy from the Judd Apatow factory, co-written by Seth Rogen, the male lead of Knocked Up. Review coming Friday.

Meet the Browns: Tyler Perry returns, and this time, he’s got Madea with him again. Will Perry once again be the box office force no one sees coming, or are people paying attention now?

Shutter: A married couple discovers disturbing, ghostly images in photographs they develop after a tragic accident. From the executive producers of The Grudge and The Ring. More Asian-based horror that really hasn’t worked, except for The Ring and the underrated Dark Water.

Other things on my mind:

  • We have another loss to mourn, this time of actor Paul Scofield, whose recent credits include Quiz Show and The Crucible. I have not seen his Oscar-winning turn in A Man for All Seasons, but it is available on Time Warner’s Free Movies on Demand channel, via the TCM category. It is also avaible on Netflix’s Instant Watching feature. One way or another, I will view it and include it in the next “What Are You Watching” report.

  • There’s going to be an A-Team movie in 2009? Ooof. What’s next, The Fall Guy? Falcon Crest? Misfits of Science? I pity the fools indeed.

  • Finally, last night when I screened Drillbit Taylor at Showcase Cinemas Cincinnati, I noticed the theater’s sign for The Spiderwick Chronicles listed Michael Kahn as one of the stars. Wow. I’m sure the editor of the film would be very pleased. He’s Steven Spielberg’s regular cutter, so I say to heck with Harrison Ford - go ahead and list Kahn for Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull!

An Excuse to Celebrate

Mad Hatter Day

Mad Hatter

Mad Hatter Day is a day to do and say things that are usually considered absurd, but acutally are very logical; and to avoid things that are considered normal, but are acutally quite ludicrous. Kinda confusing, so today it should make perfect sense. Celebrate this mad holiday by doing…pretty much whatever you want. Things to do »

Comedian Rich Vos

Comedian Rich Vos plans to give Flavor Flav a run for his money. Or maybe just his mailman. The comedian, who is busy trying to come up with the perfect TV pilot that would best something as exciting as "Sleep with Flavor Flav's Mailman," is ready to make his debut on the comedy stage in Dayton. Vos will perform at Wiley's Comedy Nightclub Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 9-12. More »

'Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist'[movies]

Tell me if you've seen this one — Michael Cera plays a slightly awkward, heartbroken young guy amidst a bunch of drunken partygoers … antics ensue. Although the plot doesn't stray too far from Superbad, this comedy about one hilarious, sleepless night of adventure in a world of mix tapes, and loud, live music should be worth a few laughs at Cera's expense.More »

The Melting Pot in Washington Twp. [review]

Whether you're looking for a new spot for a date, a night out with the girls or whatever, The Melting Pot offers delicious fondue fun for everyone at its first area location in Washington Twp. The Melting Pot's fondue dining concept is certainly distinctive. Here, the diners are the chefs. For chocolate enthusiasts — and my sense is, there are many of you — dessert here is a gooey slice of heaven. More »
