What’s opening March 21 and other musings
It’s a relatively mild week for new movies Friday, as tends to be the case when it warms up outside. Your pickings:
Drillbit Taylor: Kids tormented by a bully hire Owen Wilson as a bodyguard, not knowing his experience is lacking. It’s another comedy from the Judd Apatow factory, co-written by Seth Rogen, the male lead of Knocked Up. Review coming Friday.
Meet the Browns: Tyler Perry returns, and this time, he’s got Madea with him again. Will Perry once again be the box office force no one sees coming, or are people paying attention now?
Shutter: A married couple discovers disturbing, ghostly images in photographs they develop after a tragic accident. From the executive producers of The Grudge and The Ring. More Asian-based horror that really hasn’t worked, except for The Ring and the underrated Dark Water.
Other things on my mind:
We have another loss to mourn, this time of actor Paul Scofield, whose recent credits include Quiz Show and The Crucible. I have not seen his Oscar-winning turn in A Man for All Seasons, but it is available on Time Warner’s Free Movies on Demand channel, via the TCM category. It is also avaible on Netflix’s Instant Watching feature. One way or another, I will view it and include it in the next “What Are You Watching” report.
There’s going to be an A-Team movie in 2009? Ooof. What’s next, The Fall Guy? Falcon Crest? Misfits of Science? I pity the fools indeed.
Finally, last night when I screened Drillbit Taylor at Showcase Cinemas Cincinnati, I noticed the theater’s sign for The Spiderwick Chronicles listed Michael Kahn as one of the stars. Wow. I’m sure the editor of the film would be very pleased. He’s Steven Spielberg’s regular cutter, so I say to heck with Harrison Ford - go ahead and list Kahn for Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull!
