Jack Ryan is back! Uuuummm … yay?
Variety announced this morning that Spider-Man director Sam Raimi has landed his next franchise assignment, and it’s ….
… Jack Ryan? Of Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of all Fears fame?
Uuuhhhh … well, gosh, I’m so not excited I’m not sure what to say. It’s not bad news, certainly, but I’m not exactly hopping in my seat either.
I really like Sam Raimi as a director, And on the whole, I liked the Jack Ryan movies. I even thought Ben Affleck’s entry, Sum of All Fears, was better than most people said it was.
Still, I dunno. I just can’t muster up enough excitement to see Jack Ryan back on the screen. Some sources have floated the idea of a fourth Bourne movie, which sounded iffy to me, because I thought Ultimatum gave the series a nice bit of closure. Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass say they won’t do it unless they get a great script. If they’re on board, however, so am I. I would be more excited about that than another Jack Ryan movie.
And I really wish Raimi would scale things down. He’s proven himself a more than capable action director, but he burned himself out on Spider-Man 3, and I thought it would be nice to see him making the smaller movies he does so well, like A Simple Plan. Heck, even something minor but intriguing like The Gift would be more welcome at this point.
So what do you say to Jack Ryan being back? Yay, nay or meh? Who should play him?
