Home (Re)Viewing: And the Oscar goes to …
Another strong week for DVD releases brings us the well-deserved Best Picture winner, an endearing little sleeper comedy and the latest oversold animation from DreamWorks.
No Country for Old Men: This year’s Best Picture winner, directed by the Coen brothers, comes to DVD, and anyone who loves great crime thrillers owes it to themselves to see this. Even if you can’ t quite figure out what it all means, you won’ t be able to stop thinking about it. DVD offers the perfect opportunity to re-examine the film, which demanded repeat viewings more than any other film last year. And if you think the DVD extras will explain the movie, well … that isn’t exactly the Coens’ style. GRADE: A+
Bee Movie: Jerry Seinfeld’s foray into animation has its share of clever and funny moments, but like too many DreamWorks movies, it’s lacking in heart because it tries too hard to be hip and trendy. GRADE: C+
Dan in Real Life: Charming chemistry between Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche highlights this very likable comedy about a man who discovers the woman he’s fallen for is dating his brother, who’s Dane Cook. How COULD she? From the director of another low-key comedy about a dysfunctional famiy, Pieces of April. GRADE: B
Also out today:
August Rush: This fable about a child prodigy trying to find his musician parents looked promising on paper, with a cast including Freddie Highmore, Keri Russell, Jonathan Rhys-Myers and Robin Williams. For some, the saccharine level ran off the charts.
Hitman: Another movie based on a video game. Watch accordingly.
Nancy Drew: Julia Roberts’ niece Emma takes a star turn as a girl detective in a movie that came and went quickly last summer, but will probably have a decent life on DVD.
