Home (Re)Viewing: New Shrek, old Spielberg

Take trips to Vegas, Paris, outer space and Far, Far Away courtesy of the wonderful world of DVD.

Shrek the Third: Sure, it made pots of money, but did even the more forgiving ogre fanatics really love this uninspired movie? There are enough decent laughs to earn a slim recommendation, but this series is running out of gas to the point that I can’t honestly say I’m looking forward to a fourth Shrek. Full review. GRADE: B-

Ocean’s 13: Out of all the big threequels this summer, only two delivered the goods without significant disappointment: this one and The Bourne Ultimatum. Maybe Matt Damon was a good luck charm. This is a considerable improvement over the self-indulgent Ocean’s 12, with Al Pacino’s villain giving the proceedings a considerable boost. GRADE: B+

Paris Je T’Aime: Like pretty much every omnibus film under the sun, some shorts are better than others, but the hits among these odes to the city of lights outweigh the misses. My favorite segements: Tom Tykwer’s whirlwind romance, Alexander Payne’s intriguing study of an American in Paris, Alfonso Cuaron’s featurette with no edits, and a typically loopy Coen brothers bit of nuttiness. GRADE: B+

From the Catalog

Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Third indeed, in that this new DVD set gathers all three versions of Spielberg’s UFO masterpiece: the original 1977 theatrical cut, the special edition with the unnecessary “inside the ship” ending and the most recent director’s cut, which combines elements of both prior cuts and is the best of the lot. GRADE: A+

Also out today

Amazing Grace: This film is of local interest, as it tells the story of abolitionist William Wilberforce, for whom the Ohio university is named.

La Vie en Rose: This biopic of singer Edith Piaf is drawing considerable Oscar buzz for its lead, Marion Cotillard.

The second Shrek was tired. So I didn’t need to see a third.
