It’s just not Halloween unless I watch …

Since it’s three weeks to Halloween (as if you couldn’t guess) it’s time for this blog to get downright spooky.

For my first Halloween movie post, I’d like to hearken back to the Christmas movie post I wrote last year and ask:

What movies do you HAVE to watch for Halloween to be Halloween?

I don’t know that I have any absolute musts, but I do like to watch scary movies on TV around this time since the ones in theaters are only scary because they’re usually so bad. Here, in no particular order, are the titles I’m most likely to watch:

The Exorcist: Still gets my vote for the scariest movie of all time. A pox on those who laugh at it.

The Birds: Psycho is a better film, but The Birds actually unnerves me more, not least because a flock of seagulls swooped down on my head when I was 4 because they wanted my McDonald’s french fries. I can still see the fine detail of their feathers flapping above my head. Brr. (Question: How many of you are singing “I ran so far away” right now?)

Meet Me in St. Louis: Yes, I like to watch a Judy Garland musical every Halloween. Why? Because it has a great sequence that shows what kids did on Halloween in 1904. And it didn’t involve candy. Besides, hearing Margaret O’Brien happily scream “I’m the most horrible” is just too darn cute.

Halloween: Duh. Oh, and Rob Zombie? Up yours.

So what movies are must-sees at Halloween for you? Here’s a compilation of some TV schedules that might help you get ideas and find out when your favorite are playing.

Why Charlie Brown’s It’s the Great Pumpkin special of course, TV only not the DVD. Need those commercials to really reconnect with my youth!

Night of the Living Dead. I actually prefer Dawn of the Dead (the original one), but Night is the one they show ‘round Halloween.

I am wholeheartedly with you on The Exorcist, my friend. I don’t know how ANYONE could laugh at that film… My Halloween film fest (and yes, I do have one every year!) will include the following titles: Session 9 (one of the downright creepiest movies I’ve ever seen). The Changeling (egads… maybe I have a phobia of old wheelchairs or something… lol). The Blair Witch Project (honestly, I don’t get people who didn’t “get” this movie.) The Ring (I still get shivers even thinking about it.)
