The best movie lines no one ever quotes

When I wrote about the final line of the upcoming film Juno in my earlier post today, I got to thinking (insert pregnant pause here.)

Bad puns aside, I got to thinking about some of my favorite movie lines, and two that came to mind are ones that no one ever quotes, maybe because the lines work better in context.

For instance, everybody knows the “Nobody’s perfect” line from Some Like It Hot. But the line that always puts me on the floor is when Marilyn Monroe is talking to Jack Lemmon, who’s in drag while he/she is in a bunk on the train. She says to him, “If there’s anything I can do for you, just name it.”

Lemmon playfully responds, “Oh, I could think of a million things.” Then Monroe starts to climb into bunk with him and he exclaims “That’s one of them!”

Cracks me up EVERY time, no matter how often I see it. And it’s not even on the list of memorable quotes on the IMDB page.

One of my other favorites comes in one of the last scenes of A Boy Named Charlie Brown. He’s spent all day in bed, understandably humiliated at his latest defeat. Linus comes to visit him, and they have the following exchange:

Linus: Well, I can understand how you feel. You worked hard, studying for the spelling bee, and I suppose you feel you let everyone down, and you made a fool of yourself and everything. But did you notice something, Charlie Brown?

Charlie Brown: What’s that?

Linus: The world didn’t come to an end.

Linus was quite the sage, wasn’t he? I thought about quoting that to Ohio State fans after the Gator football defeat, but I’m not sure it would have worked.

So what are your favorite movie lines that you never hear anyone else say? Everybody knows “Frankly my dear,” “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse” and half the dialogue from Casablanca. I want to hear unique choices. In other words, if it’s on this list, It’s disqualified.

Fire away!

One of my very favorites was from Patrick Swayze in “Roadhouse”. “Be nice. Be nice until it’s time to NOT be nice.” There is also a Yoda line from “Empire” - “Do or do not - there is no try.”

I’m going to mangle this quote, but if you saw the movie, you should remember it. “It was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf. That tends to diminish the hugeness of the object, don’t you think?” — Michael McKean, This Is Spinal Tap
