Home (Re)Viewing: ‘300’ and ‘Hot Fuzz’
The top two video picks this week are both about violent warriors, although that’s pretty much all they have in common.
300: This movie has been called everything from racist to sexist to homophobic to patently fake. I prefer not to attach so much baggage to a film that’s really pretty silly. (Heck, Gerard Butler’s beard is so pointy, he could practically use it as weapon.) I see it as a sword and sandals movie that’s preferable to, say, Gladiator. (Best Picture my toga.) If nothing else, the movie is certainly a visual kick, imaginatively realized by Zack Snyder, who established himself as a director to watch with his Dawn of the Dead remake. Full review. GRADE: B+
Hot Fuzz: One of the funniest movies of the year also turns out to one of the most miraculous, by making Bad Boys 2 seem funny in retrospect. The movie gleefully skewers every action cliche in the book telling the story of a gung-ho city cop reassigned to a little village that has a few skeletons in its closet. This movie is even more fun than Shaun of the Dead, the previous effort by this crew. Full review GRADE: A-
