The movies guys and gals watch again and again
Given that Star Wars turns 30 this month (listens for the sound of people’s hairs turning gray), it seems fitting to talk about those movies that people watch over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
I’ve covered this topic in the blog before, but BBC News has found a new angle. Their story quotes a site called Sky Movies, which breaks down the most-watched films by male and female viewers.
For the guys the most watched films are:
1. Star Wars trilogy - NO surprise there.
2. Aliens - YES! This one is somewhere on my most-watched list as well. One can argue over whether this or the original Alien is better, but this one is more fun to watch repeatedly.
3. The Terminator - Arnold isn’t the only one that will be back. So will we.
4. Blade Runner: Interesting. Sci-fi dominates the list. Just what will these people do with themselves when the new DVD edition comes out with at least three different versions of the movie? Will that push the film higher on the list?
5. The Godfather: Hm, below Blade Runner. I’m a little surprised this didn’t place higher, given that is is the quintessential guy’s movie. Personally, I prefer Goodfellas. Not as long, and it’s much more kinetic.
And for the girls:
1. Dirty Dancing: Another movie celebrating an anniversary, this movie turns 20 this year. I think it’s pretty dopey, but that’s part of its charm.
2. Star Wars trilogy: Proof positive girls can be as geeky as guys.
3. Grease: The movie does come alive with a crowd, particularly when the hand jive gets going.
4. The Sound of Music: Wow, a movie older than me makes the list! Sure, it’s as sugary as ten tons of bubble gum, but it’s awfully hard not to sing along at some point.
5. Pretty Woman: Again, I’m a little surprised a movie didn’t place higher, as I’ve always though of this as the quintessential chick flick/fairy tale. Although guys may not watch this movie as much as girls, they do appreciate the, um … mood it creates.
So what are the movies that have worn out your VCRs/DVD players? Which ones send your significant other running from the room?

Derwood: I, too, think Alien 3 is underappreciated. Good call. The expanded cut on DVD is even better - too bad we’ll probably never see what David Fincher really had in mind. 007: I, too, am a big fan of James Bond, but ANY of the Bond movies? Even “A View to a Kill?”By vickie

Coming from Sky, that is probably a British-based survey of favorite films. Americans may have a slightly different slant on their favorites. In any case, “Dirty Dancing” is the most watched film by females? That’s shocking. For this female, my top five most watched films (in no particular order) are “Dawn of the Dead” (1978), “Bedazzled” (1967), “Valley of the Dolls (1967), “The Wicker Man” (1973) and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961). Patrick Swayze and Richard Gere? For romantic comedy, give me George Peppard any day!By derwood

As a guy, I will simply report the movie I have seen more than any other is Airplane! Second on the list of films I watch over and over would be Singin’ In The Rain.
