Home (Re)Viewing: Show a little backbone, willya?
Just as no new movies came out Dec. 31, the first DVD release day for 2007 is pretty quiet too, although there is one high profile title: the movie that was probably the poster child for the pitfalls of overhype.
Snakes on a Plane: Around the time this movie was coming out, people were asking me, “OK, so Eric, ‘Snakes on a Plane’ — what’s the deal with this movie?” It’s a classic case of what you see is what you get. It’s about snakes that terrorize a plane, and Samuel L. Jackson has to deal with them. Simple as that. Trouble was, the movie wasn’t anything other than that. It’s a fairly entertaining ride so far as high-gloss B-movies go, but it only becomes better than B-level if your blood alcohol level is soaring as well. God only knows you can pull any number of drinking games out of this flick. GRADE: B- Buy it/Rent it.
Also out today:
The Covenant: With this male version of “The Craft” Renny Harlin continues his ongoing quest to erase any memory that he was once one of the better action directors. Buy it/Rent it, if you feel the need.

SOAP’s problem: A mediocre director who couldn’t figure out what he wanted, and tried to be all things to all people. There are some good moments (I loved the substitute pilot bit) but it didn’t pull together as well as it should have.By Derwood
