Eddie Murphy and James Brown: HEEEEYYY!!!!!!
In the wake of James Brown’s death on Christmas day, many obituaries are rightly recounting his electrifying accomplishments.
So should I feel bad that when I think of James Brown, I can’t help but think of Eddie Murphy’s scarily accurate impression of him?
Maybe it makes me a musical charlatan, but I bet I’m not the only one who can hear Eddie Murphy saying. “I need a word here. HEEEEYYYYY! That’s good!” when Brown’s name comes up. I still laugh hysterically whenever I think of that old routine from “Delirious,” or when I think back on this brilliant number from SNL:
And how ironic is it that Brown passed away on the very day of the wide release of “Dreamgirls,” in which Murphy gives a great performance that is clearly based on Brown?
Seems like God has an interesting sense of karma too, don’tcha think?
