And the best film of the year…
… according to the critics, by and large is — “United 93.” And I could not be more pleased.
Several film boards and critics circles have chimed in with their year-end awards. Check out their lists:
Boston - what a shock, they went for “The Departed!”
AFI — “The Devil Wears Prada” is one of the best films of the year, but “The Departed” is not? Ummm … no.
Here’s what I take away from these awards.
•While I’m thrilled that “United 93” has done so well, topping or nearly-topping every list, I’m not convinced that its Best Picture nom at the Oscars is secure. Like the American public did, I fear the Academy may suffer from a case of “I don’t want to see that.” However, I think there’s a strong chance that the director’s branch, which is gutsier than the Academy as a whole, may nominate “United 93” director Paul Greengrass.
• Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren have their nominations, if not their wins, locked.
• “Letters from Iwo Jima,” the Japanese-centered follow-up to “Flags of Our Fathers,” may find itself in the five after “Flags” disappointed at the box office. “Letters” is more of an art-house film, so low grosses won’t matter as much. If “Iwo Jima” does well, then Eastwood has a shot at a nomination, but if he beats out Marty Scorsese again, I will NOT be happy. Eastwood has four Oscars and a Thalberg award. Scorsese ? Nada. I will say, however, that since Eastwood won so recently, Marty will finally break his streak, most likely.
•Along those lines, I would be delighted if Mark Wahberg came through with a nom for his role in “The Departed.” He’s the scene stealer of the year.
•All this said, I still think “Dreamgirls” is the film to beat at the Oscars. I’ve seen it, and without revealing too much, I will say it’s right in their wheelhouse.
What do you guys think?
While you’re pondering, let me say it’s great to be back. Watch this space for my own 10 best list on 12/29. And while you’re thinking, here’s a tip for you: Don’t go to Walt Disney World out of shape and wearing ill-fitting shoes and thin socks. You may well end up with a blister on your toe the size and color of a red grape. Owww ….
