Pirates reax: How did you like Dead Man’s Chest?
If you say “Arrr!” in a Pirates of the Caribbean review, is that an expression of approval or disapproval?
Whatever the case, I was curious as to what you all thought of the big Pirates sequel. As I wrote Friday, I liked it pretty well, and if the movie had been a lot shorter, it might have been the best thrill ride of the summer.
Alas, the second half, which really cooks with gas, is preceded by a limp first half that made me feel like I’d accidentally drunk too much rum before the screening. Since the climactic action sequences work so well, I find it almost criminal that the first half is as sleepy as it is.
One indicator of a really great movie is how soon you want to see it again. I’d love to catch the last hour of the Pirates sequel a second time, but I don’t feel like sitting through the dull stuff to do it, so I’ll wait for the DVD, thank you very much.
As good as some of Pirates is, it’s on the lower end of the E-ticket summer blockbuster scale. I had much more fun with MI: 3, X-Men: The Last Stand, Cars, Over the Hedge, Superman Returns and even Poseidon. OK, I’ll take Pirates over The Da Vinci Code, but that’s about it.
But that’s just my opinion. What did you think? Sure, it made a TON of money this weekend, but that was because most people loved the first movie. Did you love all of the sequel, or was it really the last hour that was cool? And would you see it again in a theater?

Well, when I watched the movie, the first hour or so did seem to take a bit long to get on, but once it did, it was worth the wait. There are a few plot points that got my goat, I admit. And while the surprise “to be continued” scene was really a bit expected, I thought the film was definitely enjoyable as a whole. I’ll be getting the DVD whenever it comes out, most assuredly.By SRCputt

When I picked up my daughter and her two friends (13-year-olds) from the theater, I had argument with them because they immediately wanted to see it again. Whether that was a commentary on the film or just wanting to stare at Orlando and Johnny again, I’m not sure, but they were ready to provide repeat business.By Sir Critic

Dave — Thanks for taking the time to comment. Perhaps my point about the overlength of both movies was a little overpowering, but it sticks in my craw, because otherwise, both movies can be quite good. I wish they were tighter and more consistent. However, I did also make sure to emphasize in both those posts that I do like the Pirates movies - albeit with reservations.By Dave

You liked it? Your last two reviews have droned on at GREAT length about how both movies were way too long and were way too long. You certainly gave the impression that you considered both these movies to be poor and way too long. Should I mention again that you thought they were too long?
