Charlotte’s Web: SOME GAS
I am utterly, totally and completely disgusted. Appalled. Revolted. Dismayed.
By the new trailer for Charlotte’s Web. Of all things.
It’s not that the trailer as a whole is bad. Actually, most of it is pretty charming. But I was repulsed by one moment that ruined the whole preview for me.
A cow passes gas.
Right after that, the sound you’ll hear is Charlotte author EB White cranking out a new version of Elements of Style for Hollywood screenwriters that says “Omit flatulence jokes.”
What really bothers me is that this is another sign of Hollywood treating kids like they haven’t got brains in their heads. Instead of trusting White’s timeless story, the writers go for the lazy joke that could have been cracked by the kids’ uncle who’s had a couple beers. I was hoping this movie could be another Babe, nor another Racing Stripes.
Look, I know little kids just crack up at those kinds of jokes, and there is a place for them … but NOT in Charlotte’s Web! Were I Charlotte, I would be making a well-placed bite right about now …

What do you expect from something that was created by Nickelodeon Studios? They made their fortunes on flatulence jokes and green goo. The 1973 version screenplay was written by Earl Hamner Jr, who also gave us the Waltons. Maybe they should have consulted him on this one..
