Good Tuesday bodes well for The Omen

Just got a press release from Fox trumpeting the fact that their Omen remake that came out yesterday made $12.6 million on Tuesday, 6/6/06.

“THE BIGGEST TUESDAY OPENING IN MOTION PICTURE HISTORY” the release proclaims.

Uh-huh. And out of how many Tuesday openings is that, Fox? I’d be real surprised if you could count them on more than one hand.

It’s just too bad 06/06/06 didn’t fall on a Friday. Then I could have had “Good Friday bodes well for The Omen” in my headline. But I digress.

Earlier on this blog, I expressed strong reservations about seeing this film. But reviews have been coming in better than expected, with Roger Ebert actually recommending it. On the other hand, reviews like this one give me pause again: The Boston Globe’s Wesley Morris says “It’s a terrible sign for a movie when the sole reason for its existence is a satanic opening date. ”

So I dunno. I’m torn. Part of me is morbidly curious, and the other part of me is loath to waste my time on what looks like, at best, glossy hackwork. Has anyone seen it yet? If so, let me know what you think, and I’ll decide if I really need to see this sucker.

Do you “have to” see it? No, of course not. Is it as different from the original as Zack Snyder’s “Dawn of the Dead” was from the Romero classic? No, it is not, but there are enough subtle variations to placate those who loathed the shot-for-shot “Psycho” remake. Is it hack work? No. It ain’t Altman, it ain’t Kubrick, it ain’t Scorcese, it ain’t even Oliver Stone. But it’s far from hack work. If nothing else, see it second run, and if you hate it that much, sneak into another film to get your money’s worth.
