The MTV Movie Awards: Kooky but scary
Although MTV as a whole hasn’t been relevant to me since the early 1990s, I still get a kick out of their Movie awards — not because I like them, but because I find their picks either extremely silly or flat-out stupid. So here are my snark-filled reactions to the latest set of nominees.
BEST MOVIE
The 40-Year Old Virgin
Batman Begins
King Kong
Sin City
Wedding Crashers
Actually, this is a halfway decent list. I liked all these movies. Nothing to make fun of here. Rats. I liked the big gorilla best. One of the few times I’d agree with MTV.
BEST PERFORMANCE
Joaquin Phoenix - Walk The Line
Jake Gyllenhaal - Brokeback Mountain
Rachel McAdams - Red Eye
Steve Carell - The 40-Year Old Virgin
Terrence Howard - Hustle & Flow
Reese Witherspoon - Walk The Line
So they’ve started mixing males and females in performances? Hm. In any case, this is another solid group, although it’s Ledger that really deserves a nom. I can see why they picked Jake, though, since he’s the more conventionally “cute” one. And bravo to the inclusion of McAdams’ work in that underrated thriller.
BEST COMEDIC PERFORMANCE
Owen Wilson - Wedding Crashers
Adam Sandler - The Longest Yard
Steve Carell - The 40-Year Old Virgin
Tyler Perry – Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion
Vince Vaughn - Wedding Crashers
I like Carell best here, tho the Wedding Crashers guys would be solid choices. But Adam Sander?: C’mon. Next to Burt Reynolds, he looked like even more of a shrimp than he usually does.
BEST ON-SCREEN TEAM
Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen & Romany Malco – The 40-Year Old Virgin
Johnny Knoxville, Seann William Scott & Jessica Simpson – The Dukes of Hazzard
Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Evans & Michael Chiklis – Fantastic Four
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson & Rupert Grint – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Vince Vaughn & Owen Wilson – Wedding Crashers
The Dukes?? Yeeee-huh?? Something tells me that if Jessica, or more accurately, Jessica’s body were not in that team, they would have missed this cut, as they should have. Same goes for Alba in Fantastic Four. The Wedding Crashers guys are the best pick here.
BEST VILLAIN
Cillian Murphy – Batman Begins
Hayden Christensen – Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
Ralph Fiennes – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Tilda Swinton – The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Tobin Bell – Saw II (Lions Gate Films)
I like Voldemort best here. But Christensen strikes me as vaguely ridiculous, and I LIKED the Star Wars prequels. And Saw II? Really?
BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMANCE
Andre “3000 Benjamin – Four Brothers
Isla Fisher – Wedding Crashers
Nelly – The Longest Yard
Jennifer Carpenter – The Exorcism of Emily Rose
Romany Malco – The 40-Year Old Virgin
Taraji P. Henson – Hustle & Flow
With the glaring exception of Nelly, a halfway decent list, tho I question whether Four Brothers was the breakthrough for Andre. He was in Be Cool too, but I can understand why people forgot that. Fisher’s a great choice — she was hysterical, in more ways than one.
BEST HERO
Christian Bale – Batman Begins
Jessica Alba – Fantastic Four
Daniel Radcliffe – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Kate Beckinsale – Underworld: Evolution
Ewan McGregor – Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
The male picks are OK, but the females ought to be nominated in the “Looks Best in Skin-Tight Outfit” category. It is MTV after all, why not be honest?
SEXIEST PERFORMANCE
Beyonce Knowles – The Pink Panther
Jessica Alba – Sin City
Jessica Simpson – The Dukes of Hazzard
Ziyi Zhang – Memoirs of a Geisha
Rob Schneider – Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo
I’ll write off the Schneider nom as some kind of sick joke. But Zhang? The MTV audience stayed awake for that movie?.
BEST FIGHT
Kong vs. The Planes – King Kong
Stephen Chow vs. Axe Gang – Kung Fu Hustle
Angelina Jolie vs. Brad Pitt – Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Ewan McGregor vs. Hayden Christensen – Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
The picked the wrong Kong fight. Should have been the one with the dinos. But of this group, I actually liked watched Brad and Angie duke it out. It was the best part of an otherwise disappointing movie.
BEST KISS
Jake Gyllenhaal & Heath Ledger – Brokeback Mountain
Taraji P. Henson & Terrence Howard – Hustle & Flow
Anna Faris & Chris Marquette – Just Friends
Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt – Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Rosario Dawson & Clive Owen – Sin City
I’m not sure whether the Brokeback boys should be gratified or insulted. Rosario and Clive were the best here.
BEST FRIGHTENED PERFORMANCE
Rachel Nichols - The Amityville Horror
Jennifer Carpenter – The Exorcism of Emily Rose
Derek Richardson – Hostel
Paris Hilton – House of Wax
Dakota Fanning – War of the Worlds
Paris Hilt…..oh, forget it. Invalidates the whole list.

I don’t know why they didn’t put Cillian Murphy for best performance. They have got to be crazy, he’s better than everyone. But I will agree with best villian for Cillian Murphy, he is just great at playing the bad guy. I feel Cillian got ripped off, he should of bee nominated more.By Allie D

I would pick Cillian Murphy for best villain. He was just disturbingly creepy in that role. And the 40-Year-Old Virgin guys for the comedy team. Although Wedding Crashers was also hilarious. I think I just liked the former movie a little better. :)
