Missing you at the movies

Having just come off of a week’s vacation, I thought this would be the ideal time to talk about absences.

No, I don’t mean mine. I mean the absences of certain Hollywood types from the big screen.

Seems the news is full these days of people either making comebacks or going AWOL from the movies. For example, Premiere magazine pointed out that Joe Pesci hasn’t been in a movie since Lethal Weapon 4, all the way back in 1998. I must confess, it hadn’t even dawned on me he was gone. Sorry, Joe.

Later this month, Robin Williams makes his first full-on live action comedy in quite awhile with the release of RV. Meanwhile, his onetime Tinkerbell, Julia Roberts, seems content to raise her twins, appear on Broadway and not star in Ocean’s 13.

Then there was Sharon Stone, who attempted a comeback via Basic Instinct 2, and well … better luck next time, Sharon - if there is a next time.

Here are a few more examples of people and things that went before at the movies that I’d like to see again soon.

Sean Connery: He’s expected to announce his retirement from movies when he accepts the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award this year, but that means his last film will have been The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Ugh. If there will really be an Indiana Jones IV, I’d much rather see him go out that way.

James Cameron: OK, so the guy hasn’t exactly been inactive, but all his deep-sea exploration stuff, admirable though it may be, is giving me the bends. I’d much rather have him dazzle us all with a full-fledged movie, which he hasn’t made since the Titanic juggernaut. He keeps saying he’s ready to shoot some kind of big sci-fi 3D flick, but can’t decide which one. Make up your mind, willya Jim?

Robert De Niro in a good dramatic role: One of our best actors has been spending way too much time lately appearing in fluffy comedies like Meet the Fockers or high-gloss junk like Hide and Seek. I know his once-frequent partner Martin Scorsese seems content with Leo DiCaprio, but it’s been 11 years since Casino. Might another teaming be in the cards someday?

How about you? Whom do you miss?
